power supply high pitch noise

Thread Starter
I have a 5+ year old antec sp-450 that makes a extremely annoying high pitch noise when turned on. the computer doesn't even have to be on just plugged in with the power supply switch in the on position.

I'm guessing this is a sign capacitors going bad and possibly of imminent failure?

Sounds like a bad capacitor alright (pun intended). I've had Antec PSUs with whiny capacitors last for 3+ years although I've had others last for weeks after becoming obnoxious.

+1 on the bad cap. I had an Antec that was as silent as could be for ~3 years, then one day it started squealing. It wasn't long for this world after that. Was fine until I put a more power hungry GPU in, then it died within a week.

5 years? Just wear and tear... You sucked it for everything it was worth anyways. Time to replace.

I use a 8 year old PSU for testing - for a universal Power supply.
For example when I have made a LED-cord or something, then I have it for testing. And that is about the only thing I think it's safe to use it for .. =)
