This is driving me nuts: Internet speed reduced to 10%?

Hey guys,

This has been driving me nuts all week, can't figure out the culprit. My overall net speed has been reduced to 10% after rebuilding my system during the week. (from avg 1MB/s -> 100KB/s).

The integrated lan is: Realtek 8111E Gigabit LAN Contoller featuring AI NET 2

What i've tried:
Contacting ISP, they said no problems at their end.
Trying all revisions of drivers, nothing changed.
Reinstalled windows fresh from a full format.
Physically looking for damage to the integrated LAN chip.

I know that changing the RJ-45 would seem another obvious option but, 1: i don't have a spare, and 2: the chances of the cable failing after 5 years, the day i rebuild system is quite low lol.

If anyone has any idea what this is about, id be very greatful, its bloody frustrating lol. Much appreciated for any replies.

What do you mean by "rebuild"? Literally take it apart and put the same thing back? Or did you install everything new?
Try removing and adding local are network again.

How do you know the speed is 1/10th? Are you visiting a website or using speedtest? Try pinging your router to see if there are any problems. Is windows firewall on and interrupting something?

Thanks for the quick reply Dromihetes mate, Im using the same Anti virus S/W i always have: Norton 360, thats a good theory thoughm i didn't think of it myself, but what exaclty would it be doing to slow my speed so much?.

Router is the same as i've always had aswell, and i've reinstalled completely fresh so i douth its malware. and to be perfectly honest, im not sure what the number 5 suggestion is, as in, somebody hyjacking my bandwidth?

Rebuilt, as in, i bought all new components and rebuild my system, and i know its 1/10th because i've had the same net for 9 years now and i know my speed lol, thanks for the reply.

Again thanks for the reply, much appreciated, +1

*Goes back into ISP tech support mode*

1. Remove the router to eliminate that potential cause entirely
2. Disable any and all anti-virus/firewall/anti-malware programs
3. Stop downloading, uh, "videos" via torrent
4. When in doubt, reset the modem, router, and PC again

90% of the time one of those four steps does the trick. The other 10% is where things tend to get extremely frustrating.

Any antivirus will hijack the flow of data via the NDIS driver so some incompatibility between the LAN driver and Norton ones can give strange speed results.
Also if the antivirus has a HTTP traffic filter and you measured the speed via a website speed test you can have this.Disable that http/browsing shield in the antivirus and see what happens.

Reset router and remake settings ,eventually change passwords in it.

Remove antivirus and disable firewall to check the speed.

Aditionally barrow a cheap network card from a friend and see what happens , this would show if the onboard LAN has personality.

LE:And yes connect directly as frizo is saying.

You could also try pinging your network card to see if your OS and hardware are communicating properly. If you see packet loss there then it could very well be your hardware.

127.0.0.1

That's your NIC's internal address.
