Help : Newbie @ Servers.

Okay..

I'm looking to build myself a server! I already have a P180 mini Case which i plan to use! Which means mATX motherboard. But i have no idea what to go with... I have a few things already, no idea if i'll be able to use them or if i should get better etc.

I want to be able to host 2 game servers of it.. Terraria & Minecraft
... Not very demanding games at all so i believe i can run 2 of 1?

CPU : E6750
Ram : 2x2GB 800mhz OCZ (DDR2)
PSU : 580w Hyper X or something. (been running for around 5-6 years.. still going well)
GFX Card : ATi 5870 / ATi 4870 (Depending if i actually need it...)

Thats all i have. Money isn't a issue but the cheaper the better. Like i said, only needs to be able to run servers for terraria / minecraft . Possibly more in the far future.

Help is required! If anymore information is needed, please ask.

I am located in the UK, i only use these 2 sites : ebuyer.com / scan.co.uk . The rest i feel are overpriced/crap so.

Thanks.

You will need some more RAM. Minecraft loves RAM. Not too sure about Terraira. I just heard of it just the other day.

you don't need a gfx card just find a board with onboard gfx or run the one out of your sig-rig for set up. once its set up you can just use remote desktop to do everything you need. my server i have only has 2 wires going to it and they are the power wire and the ethernet cord.

as for ram you may need 8gb but you could start with 4gb and see how well it runs from there.

the biggest thing would be that having a nice raid 5/6 off of a dedicated raid card (like a perc 5i). or you could spurge and get a nice 60gb ssd to help with access times. i know when i play on my minecraft server it some times takes some time to load the area im moving threw.

That's what I do. I run X11VNC on my Linux Server and basically use TightVNC to do what I need to on it. That's all that's on my server, power and ethernet.

I have no idea how to properly use remote desktop and what not. Is there guides to help me with this kinda stuff? because just having the power cable + ethernet in it sounds good to me. Just need to know how to get everything set up lol. I hate being new at some things.

I could use my i7 rig for it and just buy myself a sandybridge instead of buying a seperate parts, might work out better in the long run..

my i7 920 + 6gb ram + dfi x58. along with a 1TB hardrive. For storage, and possibly getting a small SSD as suggested for load speeds!

So thats...

CPU : i7 920
CPU Cooler : Corsair H50
RAM : 3x2GB Corsair (6gb)
Mb : DFI Lanparty JR x58
HDD : 1TB Samsung 1Tb Spinpoint F3
PSU : 580w HyperX Modular
Case : P180 Mini
DVD Drive : Random samsung one (IDE)
Graphics card : x1950Xt / ATi 4870 / A random nvidia on here in sales

How does that sound?

that sounds like a plan. i ended using most of my 775 stuff for my little home server. however you shouldn't need the i7 as it would be overpowered for a home server, but you could turn off the ht and maybe undervolt it if possible.

as for remote desktop it is super easy to do. all you need is a account with a password and remote desktop turned on under system propertys. to make it a little more complected would be how to change the port number for remote desktop from the preset 3389 to a random one where only you would know.

Correct. You want the least amount of ports to be open to the outside world.
Pick some obscure number like 5900 etc etc. Something log that a port scanner would take a while to pick out.

So like SSH. Instead of using default 22, use something like 3333
