The National Endowment for the Arts has released new guidelines for funding, and grants are now available for interactive digital games.
The biggest question, posed in the article. Is who decides what's art and what's rubbish?

CAll of duty is not art. However, the witcher 2 is definitely art.

does this mean a video game will get government funding if it has mod tools? I hope so. This could be a really great thing for PC gaming.

Let's be honest with ourselves here for a second ppl.

The state of gaming is in a pretty bad place, but do you really want government funded games???

If movie making can be considered art, and books can be considered art. Then certainly a video game should be.

But seriously, the government has got better things to do then this.

nothing wrong with more money. They don't get funding to do things how the government wants it done. They get funding based on whether the government decides if their game could be considered art or not. A game like the witcher 2 would get funding, be the same exact game it is today and maybe be cheaper or have much better optimizations. Maybe uber sampling wouldn't require 2 gtx580s to run smoothly.

The government isn't just one person running everything. It's a huge tree with many, many many branches. The government is in a lot of places that you might not even realize. Just because theres a war going on or japan is in ruin doesn't mean that the group of people who were hired to make decisions like this should just take the next couple of years off.

That snippet leads me to believe they're referring to party games and waggleware with a gem here and there, but the criteria listed for consideration seem to be thorough. We'll just have to wait and see what ends up being considered.

One thing I did notice, however:

if any your normal game is art, then call of duty, most definitely is art. I don't like it either but that's the way it is.
