[Arstechnica] US government now funds video games... if they're "art" - Page 6

Art is in the eye of the beholder; it's all perspective, all subjective.

What is an irrelevance to you may have profound impact on another.

Personally, I don't judge, make everything art for all I care. I still don't want to pay for most of it.

AAA games are so expensive now that the industry is paralyzed by the need to make a profit. Remove that from the equation and you have the ability to make something outside the protective cocoon that the big publishers have wrapped themselves in.

Will every game funded by the NEA be worthwhile? Piss Christ tells me "no." But think on this: if this gives rise to a non-profit game publisher that can charge less and then funnel any net income back into the development studios rather than into shareholder's pockets, wouldn't that be a good thing?
Here's the question I want answered:

Yes, governmental funding will remove roadblocks and make it easier for a small business to make them, but why should my tax money be spent on it? It's not the governments responsibility to hold the hand of up and coming businesses with grants.

Art can have no purpose other than itself.

Saying that, The half life series has always been very good.

The word "Braid" comes to mind.

Not all games are art, but some are.

There needs to be some... process... of some sort.

Call of duty: rubbish
Metal gear solid: art.

Can we make a petition for Episode 3 to be classified as art and consequently get government funding so that we at least know it's being worked on?

Games are not art, at least not any game backed by a major publisher. Games are created for pure profit, that is not art. Art is uninhibited by monetary gain, it is about pure expression of the imagination. The greatest artists that ever lived did it for the love of art, not profit.

Wow, I sound like a total douche, GTA IV ftw!!
