What makes a good game?

Thread Starter
To me this is a game with a good storyline, engaging and holds you there making you want to know what happens next. We know these games HL1, HL2, Fear ect.

Good gameplay, I don't want to play a game with bad controls, inaccurate hitbox's, or generally poor optimization

Graphics, these are really helpful but not required I can overlook graphics for good gameplay and a good story line, but good graphics cant fix the other 2.

So how do yall judge games as good?
I'm a sucker for weapons and armor/clothing/accessories that actually show when you wear them, if my old school rpg's did this I'd still be on the nes and snes =D

*edit* It don't necessarily make the game good, but it's that stuff that grabs my attention, and digs the hooks into me

graphics. I know a lot of people may flame me for this but I can't play a game without at least decent graphics. and then on top of the graphics, for it to be fun, it needs good gameplay. And on top of that needs to be a good story. Last but not least, sound. The game needs a very nice soundtrack that is appropriate for the things happening at the time they're happening. Along with great sound effects. But if the game doesn't have good graphics, I can't even force myself to play it.

The game that did the best at all of these, at least for me, was mafia 2. At the end of mafia 2 I was literally yelling "WHAT?! NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT! THOSE BASTARDS CAN'T END THE GAME HERE!!!" I was very connected to the characters and things happening.
Homefront sucked in all of these departments.
Metro 2033 was pretty good. I'm playing it through again.
I'm playing half life 2 for the first time but the story doesn't really drag me in. I'm kind of forcing myself to play it hoping it'll get better.
I also liked the MoH single player. Was pretty decent, but I don't think I'd play it through again.
Crysis is fun to look at and it has great gameplay. The story is nothing interesting.
Crysis 2 one upped crysis in all departments.

These are only some of the games I've played recently that come to mind.

Graphics and a good storyline. You need some interesting gear in the game too and some cool enemies if there are any.

Graphics help but I have seen it all.
Even Metro fully flexed isn't much different then what was available 5 years ago, just enhancements in the texture's and polygon count, etc.

BF3 will be the first game in a couple years to take a step forward.

I like a good story, well done controls and a solid structure.
All depends on the genre though.

games havnt really evolved since HL1

Depth. This can be in terms of art design, character customization, or story. So many games lately feel like they are designed by coked up 12 year olds with short attentions spans. Of course those can be fun too but not memorable. Plus I can't stand games that are multiplayer with a 2 second single player. Such a waste at the usual $50 price.

Music is the first thing for me. If a game has awesome music, it sucks me in from the beginning and encourages me to keep playing. For example, I've been looking for a good JRPG to play, so I got Final Fantasy 6. The graphics are terrible by modern standard of course, but the opening scene was one of the most powerful I've ever seen - all because of the music that played. It perfectly set the stage for the game.

After that, (for single player), I want a good storyline and characters. The graphics don't need to be good, but they need to set the mood. For example, Half-Life 1 is really old, but the dark graphics give it the edge of fear that makes it so great.

For multiplayer, my standards are very different. I want bleeding edge graphics, great gameplay, good social functions, diversity of game modes and maps, and immersive sound.

Fun. bottom line.

if the game is more serious and/or story focused, then it is immersion and ability to make the player "care" about the characters.

i.e. heavy rain. Maybe not the strongest story but for me personally I was immersed and actually cared what the outcomes of my decisions were, thus making it a better experience.

also, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS. 'NUFF SAID. <3

That's a good point, it depends on the game. If it is supposed to be a serious story, it better be and it better have deep characters. On the other hand, I enjoyed Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars for its gameplay, even though the story was stupid and the characters were laughably 2D.
