barbs are cheaper
I use both.

They both have their advantages, in my opinion.

Here's what I've found so far in my limited WC experience:
BARBS: cheaper, able to get amazingly tight seals (3/8" over 1/2"), and they don't unscrew from torque in the tubing, better with tight turns than standard (non rotary) compressions, imo.

COMPRESSIONS: easier to use, look nice, seriously -- they are a heckuva lot easier to use though. I couldn't use a compression on one of my components, so I used a 1/2" barb with 3/8" tubing - I ended up not paying attention to how hard I was pushing the boiled tubing onto the fitting and cut a 3/8" circle into my palm lol. I don't have that kind of problem with compressions, haha.

So, there are advantages and disadvantages of both. I'd get a mix of both.

Thread Starter
I would have to get barbs for my universal GPU block because the G1/4 holes are so damn expensive, so it would still either be a mix of barbs and compressions, or just barbs.

I'm thinking of either a mix of...
8 compressions, 4 barbs
5 compressions, 7 barbs
0 compressions, 12 barbs

I'm leaning towards the first option.
By the way, can anyone post images of their compression fittings? I'm looking for Bitspower Black Sparkle, Enzotech Matte Blacks, and the rarest of the rare; XSPC. I wish there was a comparison, I would love to see how much thicker/shorter they are over regular compression fittings.

I don't know anything about compression fittings, so I can't comment on which is better.. I do know that I can't physically pull tubing off barbs which means I don't have to worry about leaks unless the barb itself comes off.

Here you go. Sorry for the bad quality, it's on my phone.

The top fitting is a 1/2" ID Bitspower Black Sparkle Barb with a hose clamp.

The bottom is a 3/8" ID, 1/2" OD Bitspower Ultimate Compression fitting (not a Black Sparkle, but I imagine close in size.)

definitely compression fittings. Barbs are straight up ghetto. They always come for free with tons of my parts and just end up given away or in a spare parts bin.

Barbs.

Cheaper, simpler.

They don't have any leaking fittings, nor any sealing rings, nor anything that can leak. Just a chunk of metal.

Compression fittings, though I might be bias since I used barbs for my first watercooling project and they leaked horribly... eventually I fixed it but it took hours of leak testing to get it right. My second time now and I got some compression fittings and not a leak at all from the start.

Now I know people say they have the same chance of leaking if done right but I just found compression fittings so much easier to install and of course my added experience might have tainted the second go but, eh I like em more.

I kind of like compressions for smaller tubing like 3/8x1/2", but I HATE large 3/4" OD compression fittings.

I've had way too many leaks with them, barbs and worm drives are all I trust with the larger tubing.
