[solved] Stuttering in games with Asus GTX 560 Ti

So recently I moved home after graduating and brought all my stuff with me, including my computer. Later that day after setting everything up, I noticed I couldn't play Crysis 2 without a graphical stuttering every 5 seconds. I googled and figured this was a Crysis problem, but I loaded up Dead Space 2 and the same thing was happening then. I reinstalled drivers to no avail.

Then I started monitoring GPU usage during gameplay and it was all over the place spiking up and down. So I did some testing with MSI Kombustor and the GPU usage was spiking as well.

So I re-seated the GPU and fired up Kombustor again and GPU usage was rock solid around 99%. I figured my problem was fixed, but I started up Crysis 2 and found I was wrong (and MSI Afterburner confirmed it as well). I also tested Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and same thing happens.

So I ran Kombustor again and GPU usage was stable. I also ran Heaven and 3dMark11 and GPU was awesome across the board.

So how would I go about fixing this issue? It only seems to happen in games and not benchmarks. I've reseated, reinstalled drivers, tried the newest 275 beta drivers, and now I'm back on 266.6 drivers. Nothing seems to work. Everything worked without a hitch before I moved everything back home. Was there something else that could have been knocked out of place?

Also, I'm not overclocked or anything except for my CPU.

What do your GPU clocks look like when you get the stuttering? Do they drop? If so I've come across this loads of times myself, so might be able to help you.

Ah, yeah, I forgot to mention that the GPU clocks stay consistent the entire time and do not drop. It is only the GPU usage that is spiking.

May be a CPU problem,

The benches you speak of are very GPU dependant and don't really push the CPU

Reseat cooler, worst case you get a nice new application of TIM

double check mem is seated well but dought that would come loose in a move, but a large CPU cooler could have moved.

That's the rought I would go first...

Have you tried doing this?

Yeah, but reseating the CPU/cooler is one of the last things that I want to try. RAM is good to go. CPU temps are fine. Doesn't get above 65c in the short time it takes for it to start stuttering. GPU temps also don't rise above about 58c.

Ok, so apparently it will do this stuttering while watching videos on either my HDD or on Youtube so...

last thing you wanna do im sure, but clean re install windows?
if it still persists, you have ruled out every software problem possible (i think)
