Windows XP hard drive help

Thread Starter
My sister came to me today with her Dell Inspiron 1520 commenting on how she couldnt find any files and it could possibly be a virus.

Im not one to ask for help much but i suspect it could be a hard drive malfunction. Has this happened to anyone and could i possibly get some help?

Is there a way to recover her pictures without having to reinstall and going in with a program to recover them. Thanks for your time and i hope i didnt post in the wrong section.

First welcome to ocn

Try removing the hdd and putting it into a computer as a secondary drive and open it up that way ofc making sure your anti-virus is turned to the max so you dont transfer any virus's accross!

Yea if it's sata it would connect in exactly the same way as a normall hdd,

Ide i belive you can still connect via a normall ide but im not sure only worked on lappys with sata.

First of all try turning on 'Show hidden files and folders' in the folder view options.

Can you see any more files on the HDD now?

Well the issue of hidden files i know how to find them, this seems to be an issue

with the hard drive being corrupt or not being able to find the directories. When

ever the notebook boots up the background is a black screen and all previously

installed programs and files are not showing up. Thanks for the help and it tried

to hook the hdd up to my rig via sata but no luck just blue screens. Thanks for

the help i am trying a clean reinstall right now.
