lost admin password

Thread Starter
a friend of mine has a dell inspiron 1720 running vista 32bit (no install disc)

she has lost/forgotten the admin password.

How would I go about to re-setting it?

things i've learned -

There is a recovery partition, but I don't seem to be able to boot to it (looked through the bios & boot menus to no avail)

no windows vista 32 bit DVD available/dell discs(I own a couple of Vista 64 bit OEM discs (2 x WHP 64 bit & 1 Vista Ultimate 64bit)

there is probably an "easy" solution but some of the guides I've looked at online don't make a lot of sense (i can be slow at times)

edit: I had read that if you boot into safe mode there is a generic admin login... tried this and there is no admin login

thanks for any and all help!

Try this, it's pretty self explanatory. The demo will show you the password.

Of course there isn't a admin log in on Safe Mode. That was the easiest way to get into a XP box.
Google is your friend. I've heard the "my friend forgot their password" a lot & I feel very weary telling someone how to get into someone elses computer.

not really the answer i was looking for, but not altogether unexpected as people on the internet should not generally be trusted.

Admin account is disabled by default in vista. So that won't work boot up from a Windows 7 or Windows Vista setup DVD, launch the Windows Recovery Environment (RE), and then replace the sethc.exe file with cmd.exe

You can also use an application called konboot
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/...n-boot-to-usb/
This guide will help you put it on a flash drive and allow you to bypass the windows password, then just change the password and restart the computer

Try kon-boot.
http://www.piotrbania.com/all/kon-boot/

It will remove the password when you boot up, and therefore can go inside and change it. It works, I've used it.

all you have to do is burn the iso onto a CD and run it upon booting up the computer.

EDIT: ninja'd by scrappy

after a few hrs of failures i managed to create a bootable USB device, which i then used to edit the registry which enabled the disabled administrator account.

Computer is back at my friends house, soon the meatball sub will be mine!
good times.

I've never created a bootable USB drive before that was quite a learning experience! filled with interesting error messages. I plan to spend some time learning about such devices though, got some reading a head of me.

At least I have food
