Refurbished first generation iPad vs the alternatives

Thread Starter
So ASUS Transformer is sold out and I am in a bit of hurry. What I can buy right now is iPad2 for $500 or first gen iPad just under $400. How would the 1st gen iPad compare to ASUS Transformer or iPad 2? Thanks..

1/2 the graphics power, thicker, no cameras, single core processor vs. dual core

For me - I could care less about most of it, I love my 1st Gen iPad, I purchased it even after using the 2nd gen one which allowed me to get a 32GB instead of a 16GB. I use it mainly for netflix streaming, gaming and some lite note taking, it works flawlessly doing all of those

Are you signed up? I barely just got one on Newegg. It literally sold out right after my order processed.

I would skip the first ipad, but if you can pick one up for sub $300 it might be a decent deal.

iPad 2 is much better than the first. For only another $100 I'd say it'll be worse it. Thinner, lighter, dual-core CPU, dual-core GPU which greatly overshadows the iPad's GPU, more RAM, cameras. And, iPad 1 might get a little bit sluggish when iOS 5 comes out.

I'm purchasing an iPad 1 for about $400 for 32gb, a case, and a good screen protector. In all, the price difference between that and an iPad 2 is closer to $300. $600 for the 32gb device, and $100 for taxes and accessories. I think that's a good price saver, if you can get a similiar deal, and the storage space is important to you like it is to me.

As for why I'm buying an iPad instead of an android tablet? One word, apps. I'm a huge android fan, but I'm not a fanboy. Right now, in my opinion, honeycomb is a superior OS, but the limited app selection is killing it. I will probably purchase a honeycomb tablet when the next generation of hardware and software comes out, and there is a real app selection.

^ Which should happen by Q4-ish 2011. The rate at how most devs are porting their apps for Honeycomb use has been rather quick, and Tegra 3 will be released around that time frame. No better time to get an Android tablet than next year, IMO.

Ironic though considering I jumped the gun on a Transformer just now for lulz. I'll skip Tegra 3 and go for Wayne Tegra 4, and by that time Honeycomb/Ice Cream Sandwich will be most certainly at its prime.

That's pretty much my prediction. With Asus teasing (on separate occasions) a continuation of the transformer line and a new Asus tablet running T3 later this year, I think that's the model I'll go for. If I hold out that long

What's even cooler is that the next in the Transformer series will be able to take advantage of the very same keyboard dock the current tablet supports. If this is actually true, then many will save hundreds on just swapping out the tablet for an upgrade.

And no, I wasn't able to hold out that long.
