[msb]ECS HDC-I Mini-ITX Fusion Board Review

The board BIOS does not have a lot of options to set (I would have preferred a more advanced overclocking menu), but comes with the Turbo option and the ability to set the memory clock speed and timings, something that was not available on the previously tested Foxconn board. When activated, the Turbo mode gives quite a noticeable boost in most of the tests, leaving the other platforms in the dust. What seems interesting is that even if the CPU clock speed jumps up to 2133MHz (from 1600MHz), the power consumption does not seem to increase much.

Besides the Bluetooth interface, for added value, ECS have included in the package a Wireless N card, along with the internal cable, the metallic bracket and the WiFi antenna; this one is powered by the Realtek RTL8188CE Single-Chip IEEE 802.11 b/g/n WLAN controller. The small 40mm fan present on the heatsink, which cools both chipset and CPU, is temperature controlled; with the application provided by ECS, eSF, we can set our own fan profiles, in case we do not like the predefined ones.
This seems to be the most complete and the best Zacate system so far. It really has everything!

It really overclocks good and gives a big boost in terms of performance without taking much more power

Two power phases....

However, a guaranteed 2.1GHz OC? That's amazing! Everyone else can only hit 1.8-1.9GHz.

Need a bigger heatsink though....
Once again...

An interesting option can be found in the Frequency/Voltage Control menu; this is called Turbo Mode and seems to raise the CPU frequency quite a bit (the description for this overclocking option from the manufacturer is “Turbo Mode Good Luckyâ€
I'm pretty sure 2.1GHz is not guaranteed, as shown by the description in the BIOS. I'm sure this was one of the higher binned chips, ECS just sent this so they look good.

Then it must have been hand-selected then.... I haven't seen a review of a E-350 hitting anything that high. I know Gigabyte ones are limited to 1920MHz and most can't hit that stable.

Most likely, I highly doubt they can guarantee that every E-350 will come even close to 2.1.

I'm torn on this one. Amd knows what it's chips can and can't do. So they try to stop you from getting yourself into trouble. But it can be abused.
And it's doubtful it has anything to do with the board.
Most manufacturers use a constantly improving manufacutring process. They constantly work on the mask to make it imprint a better transistor and gate. This usually results in a 100 to 200 mhz speed improvement on similarly ion doped chips every mask redo. If they improve the ion doping mask they can get more unless they just mess up and starve out an area.

AMD does not limit it's clocks, AMD only provides the companies with the chips they need, It's up to the board manufacturers to put in overclocking options, or in Gigabyte's case, the lack of options. You are correct that the process does get better, and later chips will, most likely, do better than earlier chips, but this has nothing to do with Gigabyte limiting the clock speed on their boards.

ECS? Lets just say I'll let the early adopters be Guinea pigs for me, since ECS doesn't exactly have a sterling reputation.
