Quick question on the best wireless set up.

Thread Starter
Hey OCN, just a quick question on which set up to choose from.
Would you guys rather get a PCI card such as
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-33166033-L09D

or make a bridge with either
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SUS-_-33320066
or an E1000 with DD-WRT.
Can DD-WRT be used as a bridge to connect a non DD-WRT router?

I'm just looking for speed here.

Im a little confused. whats your goal. granted you are looking for speed. all i see is a router. and a wifi card. can you be a little specific on what your using it for. the best i can tell you is that wireless-N is going to be your best speed/range combo if thats what you are looking for.

Well yes, I know. I'm looking for a fast solution to connect to my router which is a single-band Wireless-N router.
I'm asking which way would yield a faster connection between the two.

what are you using to connect to the router now. Me i would chose a better wifi card and antenna over using a bridge. Your best speed is going to come from a wire

I am using a wireless-n usb adapter that came with my Netgear router.
I see, but wouldn't the bridge's antenna be stronger? Also with DD-WRT on it, should it be faster?

One main question, what signal level are you getting?

A bridge/Repeater will only help if you have a fairly low signal. There will be no gain in speed if you have a great signal from 2 AP's, you can only connect to and utilize one at a time.

I only go for the PCI or PCI-E card when it comes to a desktop. USB has failed be enough times. That is just personal experience.

Speed will be determined by what protocol you are using (802.11g/n or 802.11a/n) and if you are using the 2.4GHz side or 5GHz side. The 2.4GHz side can give you a Maximum of 150Mbps with a 20MHz channel (802.11n). The 5GHz side can give you upto 300Mbps with a 40MHz channel (802.11n). The maximum for straight 802.11g/a is 54Mbps. Those are the maximums, that you really would only be able to achieve with Intranet. Your Internet speeds will be determined by the Speed Rate purchased from your ISP.

So lets us know what your current problem or issue is. We can then go from there.

Also, I threw that card in my wifes desktop and she can connect at 150Mbps just fine. Never tested the actually Maximum performance of the card since she doesn't care. But it's more than fine for streaming HD content, Pandora One, Todays Big Thing, Facebook...etc.

Alright, so I currently use a Netgear WNR2000 v2 which is going to be flashed with DD-WRT.
The router is 2.4Ghz only I believe but is on wireless-n. I don't know the the internet speed I have purchased from my ISP, but I know I have room for improvement for sure. Currently me speed is:

There are around 4 devices on my network at a time.
My current issue, is that my connection speed is way too slow. I get 1 bar in Windows around 90% of the time, and the other 10 is 2 bars. I'm looking for a way to increase my connection as far as I can go from my position wirelessly. I can't run cables anywhere or move the router.
I was thinking about making a bridge from an E1000, then connecting it to my desktop through an ethernet cable.
I'm wondering if I just get a PCI wireless adapter would it produce the same results.
Currently using a Netgear Wireless-N WN111 v2

those are odd speeds to say the least. its usually the downs thats faster then the ups.

how far are you from the router and is there any way you can test the speed from a closer computer, like a laptop or something.

also how many other wireless networks are there around your house?

Hmm, let me retest.
Much faster this time, but this is as fast as it ever gets.

My computer is around 50 feet away from the router. I will get to testing the speed of an ethernet cable through a laptop.
Around 2 other networks around me.

Also, I was thinking about saving for a powerline ethernet kit. Any good?
