HTPC options

Thread Starter
If I have about 500-600 to play with in about 3 months, I am wondering what would be the best option for getting an htpc.

1) Build an htpc straight up, the only thing I have to go in it would be a GTX 260, which I dont even know if that is suitable due to its size.

2) Upgrade my sig rig to bulldozer and use the leftover parts plus some new stuff to make an htpc

3)Buy a 500-600 gaming laptop from the marketplace and use it as an htpc. I figure this option will allow me to have a decent portable computer as well as something for my new TV in my living room.

Thoughts?

I think $500-$600 would build you one heck of an HTPC.

Spinpoint $65
ModXStream $50
RipjawsX $50
Blu-Ray $65
1155 Mobo & CPU $250

Totals about $500 AR.

Add in that GTX260 and whatever mATX case you fancy and I would say you have a pretty decent gaming HTPC (Sorry if you didn't want a gaming one. It's just the way I do it )

I also third this. A htpc won't require anything that up to date. My current htpc is an e2180 intel, with a gts 240. Runs hd movies perfectly even from the network. Look into openelec and xbmc, openelec doesn't require alot of configuring

Not this one.. I don't think I've seen a good gaming laptop for less than $1000.

well when I say good I mean like..good enough to play league and source engine games. Maybe I don't know the price range on those laptops though.

Looking like a bulldozer upgrade though.

Are there any HTPC cases that will fit the GTX 260? Kinda doubt this.

What's the length? The GD04/05/06 might if you remove the HDD cage which is pretty decent for such a shallow case.

There are also a number of larger ATX cases (Silverstone and Lian Li make some really pretty ones) that can probably accommodate it. Alas, I steer clear of those as they're usually too big to fit in my entertainment center.
