Can unstable GPU OC cause BSOD while not playing games?

Hey guys, any help is appreciated. System is i5 2500k 4.6ghz @ 1.29v and RAM is some kingston hyperX blue running at rated. My system was stable 10hrs blend and 20 passes linX.

But I recently OC'ed my 570 to 850/1700 and wasn't sure if it was 100% stable got a BSOD in Fable III once and bumped another voltage notch then had to go to work.

Left PC on with no games running, assumed 570 to be running in downclocked mode (50core, 101 shader) while I left something to DL.

Returned to find the system BSOD'ed.

Would you guys say this could is GPU OC related even (I assume) at those low clocks? Or is it probably other parts of my system unstable?

Thanks in advance.

I've gotten BSODs before because of an unstable GPU overclock. During both idle and load.

Never second guessed the stability of the other components when BSOD at idle?

For me, BSOD usually means CPU instability and driver crashes or gray/black screens meant GPU instability. I don't think I've gotten a BSOD for GPU being unstable yet, but I'm not saying it's impossible.

All my other components I knew were stable. This was back when I was first setting up Crossfire, so I knew it was a GPU-related BSOD.

That was probably due to a driver issue, not a hardware issue.

I don't think it's likely that you'll get a BSOD from a GPU overclock. I never have.

It is possible. I've experienced it first-hand.

Well it was actually more related to Crossfire than the overclock itself. But nonetheless still a problem caused by a GPU.
