Converting FREENAS into WHS

Thread Starter
What would be the easiest way to do this? Right now i have 2x2TB Drives 80%ish full in total and formatted with UFS with data i want to keep. I also have a 1.5TB drive and a couple more 500GB drives all empty to shuffle files if necessary.

Do you have more than one motherboard/chassis/etc available? If so I would say install WHS and copy the data over the network from the freenas to the WHS machine.

I suppose you could format the spare drives in some generic FAT16 or FAT32 so that both OSes can read/write to the drives.

I assume the freenas is in some kind of network share as opposed to iSCSI? Might need more information.

Yes format the spare drives NTFS and then copy your data over too them. If you can not get all your data on your spare drives then move whats left onto one of the 2 2TB and remove the other one and format it ntfs and copy the rest to that drive. When you go to install WHS first just use one drive for the system drive. You should use a smaller drive for the system drive, first because the OS will not use that drive unless there is no space available and if it use it will slow down the system drive. Once the OS is installed then add the drive from the freeNAS and it to the pool. Then add the second 2TB drive but dont add it too the pool. Move all the data to the shared folders and then you can add the drive to the pool. Repeat with the other drives. If you do not want to leave the drive in the server then don't add them to the pool. The data will be balanced over the drives in a few days.
