the witcher 2 brings my 580 to its knees with uber sampling on at 1920x1080. without it it runs super smooth.

same, uber sampling kills me lol, i don't really notice a difference with it on.

yeah, I'm trying to avoid the stutter / get away from dual GPUs for now. I hate buying a game and having to wait for sli support to be added and THEN it's still not running optimally.

That said, at newegg the standard evga gxt 580 is $479.99 while their "superclocked" one is $489.99. It's only $10 more.. is it a better card? I mean if I can O/C it more for $10 extra, why not.. but if they're just doing what I'm going to do anyway, I don't see the point

I gave up on evga superclocked, my first 580 was a more expensive SC version, the last 3 were the vanilla version, & all 3 of the vanillas overclock better than the superclocked.

if you love to benchmark all day then do dual gpu, if you want smooth game play then get a high end single core gpu.
