If you don't put sensitive data on them, go with dual 500GB, much greater performance. If you want safety, go for the 1TB.

I'd just go for the 1TB because, even though raid 0 is faster, there's a risk if 1 drive dies. I had it happen when I did RAID 0 on 3 drives. I was very disappointed when I lost my 67 hour New Vegas save along with my 43 hour Borderlands save. It was a sad day.

I have found that simply having two drives is more useful than having one drive, even if I don't RAID them. Get two drives, and you will have the option to RAID them.

He can always partition the 1TB to two 500GB if he wants to sort data better. If you mean removing the one of the two drives..well okay.

If you're looking at Caviar Black drives, why not grab 2x Samsung F3 1TB drives and do a RAID0 with those? Short stroke them as well (make the partition smaller that you boot from, mine are at 80GB).

Yes partitioning works, but having two HDDs give him even more options. Such as RAID.

True. However, the $/GB isn't worth the option of having RAID 0 in a home system, IMHO.

well the odds arent much higher that 1 of 2 dies in comparison to 1tb dieing, both have the same end result.

what do you exatly mean by sensitive data, i dont want to store only audio + video files on it (can't think of any non sensitive data)

edit:
if i dont do raid 0 i'll go with 1 1tb and buy another one later when i got more money to spend.
