SDD question

Thread Starter
Hi all,
I have the asus z68 motherboard, and in my understanding if i got that board, i dont have to install windows 7 on the SDD to make the start up faster right? All i got to do is install the windows 7 on to my ordinary hard drive and then use the software the motherboard has (called SDD cache or something?) to speed the whole computer up (including the start up)?
thx

Gotta put the SSD and HDD in RAID, install Windows on the HDD and download the RST(or whatever it is called) and you are set.
Though, I would say: Use it if you have a small SDD (like 20-40GB), otherwise just use the SSD as your OS boot drive as it gives a lot bigger performance boost

Another thing to note is when using ssd caching on the z68 boards, the ssd would be subject to much greater wear than when used as purely an OS drive.

The ssd caching tech uses the ssd to cache frequently accessed files and depending on your usage can run through many more write/erase cycles than when used as an OS drive.

It is because of this characteristic of the tech that intel's own ssd product targeted for use as a ssd cache uses SLC and not MLC chips to prolong drive life.

Just install windows on your SSD. There is no point in using your SSD as a storage drive when you have got windows running on a HDD, because it will make hardly any difference if any.

Yeah if you plan to buy anything larger than a 30GB SSD, you would be better off just installing Windows 7 right on it, in my opinion. Less wear on the SSD and more performance. SSD caching is really designed to add really small cheap SSD's to HDD's to improve the access times and responsiveness of an HDD, but it won't give you as much as if you had Windows completely installed on the SSD, and it will cut down the life of your SSD because of the more consistent writes as you use it over time.
