[Noob Question] Pentium 4 or Pentium D? - Page 3

if the 620 supports a cpu upgrade then I would say go with that. It sounds like the board supports more options for upgrades...

However for the use I doubt you need anything more that a 3.0 PD & 2GB ram...

Isn't the AUD stronger than the USD?

1 U.S. dollar = 0.942684766 Australian dollars

Then why is the 2500k more expensive in AU than in US when it should be cheaper in AU than US? Unless the same rule applies there too. =P

Software not included and with that said, I guess the Pentium D's at a fair price.

I've a few friends in Australia and yes everythings expensive but their wages reflect that, a case of 20 beers is $40 AUD and a packet of cigerettes is $17 AUD, Here it's about £10 for a case of beer and £6 for a packet of cigerettes. In the UK he was earning less than £500 a week as a Diesel-Fitter, in OZ he's earning $1750 AUD per week.

Thanks for the Info guys, I'll go for the 620 and see if the 300w PSU will run my old 8800GS so she can play Empire Earth lol.

Think logically, not by numbers/statistics man. Youre not going to want to be multi-taskng 4gbs worth of data on a pentium 4 anyway, it just wont be able to handle it.. she'll be at 100% useage 100% of the time. Go with the pentium D, itll handle video watching much better, just tell her to keep her facebook tabs to a minimum, because theres no way in hell a dell OEM motherboard will support a C2D.

8800GS will be too much for a 300W PSU I think, especially since it's used. If you're gonna use that 8800GS, better get a decent 400W for it like a 400W Corsair CX or something similar.

It's more expensive in Australia due to our ridiculous import tariffs and GST.

Tariffs are in place so we can 'protect' what little domestic manufacturing we have, and GST is there so everyone can pay the government money.

Wow.... I couldnt read the whole thread, the lack of old intel knowledge was killing me.

I would definitely get the Pentium D. You dont need a PCIE card for an HTPC, they make HD4k cards in AGP format which is more than enough for an HTPC.

As for the Pentium 4s, HERE are the options on what it is, whereas THIS is the Pentium D. Faster chip in the end, more cache, better tech, better features, and it runs cooler. Pentium D and video card is the way to go.

If she's only using it for video watching and stuff, get her the cheapest one, throw in some low power HTPC card (GT 430/520 or something) and call it a day.

EDIT: looks like that Pentium D is a dual core, definitely go with it over the P4 then. Just be sure to get a decent quiet aftermarket cooler for it if she can't bear the noise of it, as those Pentiums run hot.

Aren't we just jacking up the price now? He needs a pc just for a few weeks and won't be doing anything resource intensive. Its quite possible the 300W psu could run the 8800 GS just fine. The worst that could happen is the system will shut down because of too much power draw.

Imo there is no point in spending money upgrading an old system unless you are really going to make use of it.

Side note : Am*, how's that 3200+ holding up for you? I had the same processor with a 4850X2 and was having serious bottleneck issues. I could only OC it upto 3.5ghz on stock though.
