[Noob Question] Pentium 4 or Pentium D? - Page 5

Jeeeez calm down guys!

I text her earlier saying I was going to go for the 520, she asked would she be able to play simple games on it to which I responded no. Then I came here to ask for advice, I got the advice and text her back saying I was going for the 520 then she asked if there was a possibility the 620 would run Empire Earth if I put my old surplus card in it.

Basically she uses it for web browsing for an hour or so per day and perhaps streaming TV for an hour or two. The empire earth comment was just an ''If possible'' query.

So, I've read everyones posts and it seems the Pentium D is the way to go plus it saves me money. If will do her 'til she either gives me money to build her a decent PC or til I gather the parts over time to build a decent rig. Shes coming from a PC with a Pentium 3 in it and 256mb of RAM so anythings an upgrade tbh.

Pfft in that case, she'll be over the moon with it for a long time. I use a Pentium III for work as well and the difference between it and my Athlon or your P4 even in normal web browsing is night and day. Get the P4, slap in whatever GPU you find sufficient and it'll be fine for even a bit of casual gaming (depends on what games you play and what GPU you use, the game you mentioned will run fine even on a low end integrated GPU).

So your saying P4 now? God I hate Dell, so confusing with they're specs!

I wish I had the cash on me to build her a cheap AMD 550 rig.

I need to make my choice in the next hour, pro's/cons for the Pentium D/Dell GX520?

I still think the dual core is better. Modern applications(even web browsers) would benefit alot from two cores.
Sorry, I can't talk about any pros or cons for the dells, I have no knowledge about them.

If you can get an Atom based rig then it would be good for most of the current gen applications.

Take the Pentium D, which is essentially 2 P4's on one chip. The P4 might have a higher frequency, but 2 cores is going to matter much more.

Heck, a PD based computer still makes quite a decent machine, as long as you don't need to play the latest and greatest games or do major photo / video editing and stuff like that.
My parents have a similar box running Windows 7, the only thing really slowing it down is the HDD.

So yeah, get the GX 520 and couple it with a GT430 or so low profile card and it'll run all the basic games you can throw at it.

I've only ever used AMD myself so i'm a complete Intel noob.

Dell Optiplex GX520 - Pentium D930, 3.0ghz, 2gb RAM, 160gb HDD, usual USB slots etc, CD-Writer/DVD-ROM, Windows XP

or

Dell Optiplex GX620 - Pentium 4, 3.6ghz, 2gb RAM, 160gb HDD, usual USB slots etc, CD-Writer/DVD-ROM, Windows XP

Which would you choose?

Cheers.
Either/Or. It's a backup system. Either will perform the role admirably.

I changed out the cpu in a freebie Dell Dimension 4300s (a P4 originaly at 1.4 upped too 2.8 but still with 400 mhz FSB). I had to flash the BIOS to A06 and it runs just fine for a browser or a email machine but it still gives a bit of stutter when watching NetFlicks video. I upped the cpu as it was the cheapest upgrade (cost me 30.00) to try and make a Netflicks machine. I could throw 60-75 at it and get a better video card or spend the same and get 1 gb RAM (as it only has 768mb) and use it as an Untangle machine (my Untangle wants to use a little over 800mb and Untangle says 1gb or you will see trouble). What I am getting at is I did the cheap fix and I still came up short, I need a new gpu or more RAM to make the rig do the things I want and I do not feel like putting any money in it.
