What kind of draw can 1 wall socket handle?

Thread Starter
I don't know if this is a 'how long's a piece of string' type question.

The power in my flat's playing silly buggers. My office only has 2 double power sockets. They're on opposite walls but I'd imagine it's a series circuit.

I power a fan (a room fan) from one and my sig rig, 2 screens, 2 external HDDs, a super underclocked server PC and a router into the other.

Earlier, when the PC was plugged in the fan would turn off (even when not turned on)... when the PC was unplugged the fan would restart.

None of the plugs are loose.

None of the circuit breakers tripped.

Coincidence?

Is it worth running a long extension lead so some of the power is drawn from a different wall socket?

Thanks
My do-it-all rig

Thats really strange, for room cooling fan to stop spinning drop in voltage need to be huge. Its more likely your PC crash or turn off 1st. Also draw for fan and PC is no way big enough to make noticeable drop in voltage.
As for maximum wall socket output, it depend on wires used and your fuse box, but its usually in range of ~10-25A@230V in europe, not sure how is it in your location.

Wonder why they would be in series. Makes no sense for wall sockets.

Could be a bad connection in the "switchboard" ( using google translate here, not familiar with the terms in english)

edit:
The mystery is easiest to solve by just checking the wiring out.

All wall sockets are always in parallel, thats how they all get the same voltage. A fuse on the other hand is connected in series.

Weird things happen with power sockets. My system sometimes goes into hibernation all of a sudden when ever there is a power fluctuation..

This would not make any sense. If lets say you had 6 outlets in series, in order for outlet6 to work you'd need to have outlets1 through 5 in use.

How much draw depends on the breaker/fuse rating. Unless local building code is incredibly unsafe, you'll pop a breaker/fuse before you pass the rating of the wiring in the walls.

In the Philippines, you can't be sure of anything!

In my bedroom, room fans spin fastest in the socket closest to the condo's source of power and slower when they're further away.

TBH, I don't really understand Think I'll all a sparky in the morning...

Thanks for the replies... off to bed now.

So with the fan on and running, does it cycle on and off every time you plug unplug and plug the computer in? If yes, then of course it's not simply a coincidence.

If yes, then does it also do it(the fan cycle on and off) when you plug any device in place of the computer?

i tend to not actually read these sort of posts, because the answer is always a simple one

Buy a Battery Back Up unit and be free of all issues for a looong time =)

I myself Rock an APC Back-UPS RS 1500

Gives my sig rig and monitor, room fan and backup drives 17 min on battery

Imagine the bulbs are outlets, the electricity wont go through unless there is something plugged in and in use in the sockets.

That would not help in this case, it's probably something else.

Circuits in series are daisy-chained...and daisy chaining only works when each circuit in the chain is closed.

In parallel circuits, there is normally some voltage drop across the circuit. However it should be negligible. I don't know what electrical code is in the Philippines, but your room may be an electrical fire hazard. I'd call a pro and have them look at it.
