The UM2 has more volume more in your face and it seems to compete for space with the vocals and some of the guitar riffs. When things got fast and complex the TF10 stayed the same, very compsed while the UM2 kinda got flustered were the sounds (although all there) kinda went all over the place. I also noticed that the UM2 is easier to drive as I had to turn the volume up when I listen to the TF10 to achieve the same volume. I used to amp my TF10 when I listen to it, it mad a big difference in sound quality.
I would have compared more songs, but it's a pain in the a** to a/b in-ears as they are more difficult to put on and take off.. hope it helps.

IMHO I think you should reshell your TF10 and get portable amp.

Good songs smile.gif Thanks for the effort to compare the two. I have an iBasso T3D portable amp and I use it for my IEMs and notice a positive difference than unamped.

As far the speed, I got the impression that Westone UM2 was able to keep the pace but it didn't have the clarity as other IEMs. I see a trend from UM2 owners that they make the comment like you did above regarding the mids; they seem more forward/apparent.

I'll keep the reshell option in mind. Your impression of the two IEMs doesn't surprise me, kind of seems inline with what others have compared to Shure's and alike.

My real attraction to Westone was something different, then I saw a lot of people were happy with the comfort of them. I've been looking for a more comfortable universal IEM before I seriously look in custom routes, because if I do, I can't sell them or have people try them out lol.

Ah another Ultrasone owner! I will be interested in your followup on the Ultrasone vs UM2 comparison.

I've been hearing a lot that the comfort with the UM2 is excellent. Interesting comment regarding with the sound, so you don't think it would sound good with rap, metal, and techno (I guess I'll have to wait for you to get your ipod back)?

Do I see Ultrasone? Well, I will say the UM1 is simply not comparable to the Pro 550 I have. The UM1 makes my Pro 550 sound like it has a U-shaped frequency response with a ton of bass and treble. The UM1 is extremely comfortable. On the 15 hour flight from Shanghai to Newark, I took them off once or twice just to see how loud it really was in the cabin. The noise was deafening. The long Comply tips work extremely well.

I own the UM1 (single BA) and I will say it's very mid-oriented. It has trouble with bass and treble compared to the dynamic drivers that I'm used to. However, it also has isolation like no other headphone or earphone I've used. It's a lifesaver on airplane rides.

I paid $100 or so for mine about two years ago but I'll have to say it was worth the price.

^
this, i feel like um2 need more 1 driver(um3x ?) to cover it...lol
about the dynamic also, it's true ^^

^Thanks for your comments.

I guess I'll put off on purchasing them for now. I don't think I will like the sound they seem to provide. I'm happy with what I have now, but I guess I was looking more of a different sound signature than what seems to be perceived above.

I don't know if spending the extra money on the UM3x over the UM2 would be worth it if I haven't heard a pair of Westone's before.

You can check my sig for what I have now. I like what I have now, just expanding and want to switch things up a bit.

Thoughts from Westone owners?

I find choosing the right IME is like dating girls - you could find one who's drop dead gorgeous but there will be a personality clash.
It's the same with personal monitors.. it's a very personal thing, methinks.

In the past I've have tried a number of IME's recommended by other people and have been somewhat disappointed. What you'll ultimately choose will really depend on the type of musical styles you'd prefer.

For instance.. I've tried the UE TripleFi 10 Pro's and found them to be utter trash, great bass but no mid-range and no high!! Then I've own the highly acclaimed Shure SE535 often prayed for it's excellent sound stage but to me they sound dull, lifeless, some what muffled and rather muted. Worst, them small black olives hurt my ears!! - I still have them, though I should really sell them.

Later, outta shear determination to find something I like, I tried the cheaper UM2 without the removable cord and found them to be excellent.. Perfect for heavy metal, rock & alternative music but lacked mid-range when it come to vocals. Eventually I upgraded to the then new, UM3x and discovered they're not really suited to however the soundstage is astonishingly clear especially when i'm in the mood for vocals, opera and classics. Excellent lows, strong mid ranges and crystal clear highs.... However, they just didn't sound right to me. Currently I'm using and loving my custom ES5. So far they're the best!! Great for everything I listen to except playing games, they're just too damn sensitive.
