HDMI audio over DVI

Thread Starter
for some reason I just got a 760g with DVI and VGA onboard and tried using a DVI-HDMI adapter and it only carries video.

the board is a Gigabyte and the chipset by definition supports carrying audio. I had a Biostar 760g aka Radeon 3000 that was a cheaper board and carried both, yet the Gigabyte is considered better but doesn't do this?

am I missing an option somewhere for ATI HDMI AUDIO?

Dvi cables can't carry audio, even with adapters.

I've never actually seen this work, but apparently DVI can carry audio when used with certain GPUs and certain HDMI-DVI adapters...

First of all there are nV cards that will do HDMI Audio via DVI adapters, but they are rare with a SPDIF passthrough that runs back into the card from the external audio card/source and will only support up to 5.1 audio (SPDIF limitation), while the HD4K does 7.1.

Second, yes AMD and nV use special adapters that use some of the additional pins to send data for the audio channel, they are different than the standard adapters.

I don't have the answer to your question, but you are correct. The DVI specification does not provide for audio, but there are several unused pins that manufacturers can do what they want with, and they often add audio on PCs.

As for your actual question, there is no mention of it on Biostar's website, or anyother site I can find. If Biostar didn't wire the DVI to forward audio from the onboard audio out, then its not going to do it, which is what I assume is happening here.

If your motherboard even supports it you need AMD's adapter or one just like it and their HDMI driver installed.

DVI->HDMI w/ audio works with my ATI graphics card, though the audio only works if I use the adapter that came with the card.
DVI typically does not carry sound. However with some vid cards/mobo's as long as you have a DVI to HDMI Adapater it will carry sound.

I had my gtx 260 with the dvi to hdmi adapter (provided in the box as an accessory) pushing video and sound to my LCD TV. I had to plug in the spidf cable from my vid card to a port on my motherboard though to get it to work. Some vid cards do not have the proper connections, some motherboards dont have the proper connection, and some dvi to hdmi adapters dont always pass sound however.
