Replacing E7/E9 and ATH-A700s...

Thread Starter

Like title, doing an upgrade. I really feel like I'm missing out on bass so I'm thinking of going with the Beyer Dynamic DT 990 600 Ohm headphones :

I'll be pairing it up with some serious Schiit. The Schiit Lyr: http://schiit.com/products/lyr/

Would those two be a good pair or shouldn't I have the need to upgrade my E7/E9 combo?

I think you should try it with the E7/E9 combo first and then make the move to the Schiit Lyr when you feel like you could benefit from it.

I'll probably do that, just worried that they won't be able to handle the 600 ohms.

I'm a little biased. I think the E7/E9s are toys basically, but have you even tried the DT990s? There are many negatives to it and unless you want them for their positive aspects, you may be disappointed. A700s and DT990s are two completely different headphones. Very bipolar.

If you like the A700s because you're a gamer, but want bass, there are other options...cheaper options..

E7/E9 will handle 600 ohm easily...try it out first...for 200$ you can't really beat E7/E9 combo...they're not perfect obviously but for that money they're more than enough

Will keep the e7/e9 combo before moving up, but now I see I can get the Denon AH-D2000 for $240 shipped, about 70 bucks cheaper than the 990 . How's the bass on the Denon compare?

The Fiio E9 is a good cheap amp able to drive most hard to drive headphone real easy, Like the AKG 701/2's. Most people look at the price of the Fiio E9 and scoff at it and think its nothing. The amp worth alot more then what Fiio is selling it in my view.

I would say keep your Fiio E9 and give the DT880 600ohm a shot on it. It should beable to drive it if not close enough. Make sure to set the Fiio E9 to high gain if you do get the DT880 660.

I currently drive my Beyer DT 990 (600ohm) with an E9. It's a very good combo. As for the Denon AH-D2000...I'd rather go with the DT 990s. The only Denon I favor over the DT 990 is the AH-D7000.

Yeah, you're pretty biased. The E9 has some serious power. Not a toy at all.

on paper the e9 comes up pretty short. typically you want to have more power than is needed to run your headphones at a lower volume on the amp, but the e9 at max volume still cant touch the max end of the power spectrum on the 600ohm 990s.
