[wired]Gamers Target U.S. Troops in Chinese Military ‘Shooter’

China’s latest stealth fighter might be cloned from the debris of a shot-down U.S. Air Force F-117. Chinese naval warplanes are reverse-engineered Soviet designs, as is its navy’s only aircraft carrier.

For decades, China has copied many of its military systems from foreign-made originals. It’s a hallmark of a fast-growing power just finding its footing in the high-tech world.

The latest example? A first-person-shooter video game, developed by China’s Giant Network Technology Co. and backed by the People’s Liberation Army. It’s apparently modeled on the U.S. Army–made shooter America’s Army.

I really want to play this game. And I'm an American. I also happen to really, really like first person shooters. Hell, if I can play a fictional game like Call of Duty, I might as well play a game about a fictional China vs USA conflict. I really want to see what it looks like in person, and not just on some youtube video.

How many people are going to get offended by this... After we've been shooting at foreigners for years in video games.

If you repudiate FPS' of any kind then it's no shocker that you would be equally offended by this.

I know it's a hard concept to grasp but not everyone enjoys FPS.(I, myself do enjoy them) Perhaps those that play them and repudiate them are different factions?

Maybe, just maybe.

Iran made a similar game two years ago.

I've played all sorts of games where I've had to shoot "people" who looked like they might have been USA military. Though it ussually for a reason like treason, mind control, crazy people...ect. Though it wouldn't matter if it was clones of Oprah Wimphrey...it is just a game. I want to play this one too...looks fun.

Most of the time you are fighting some one else who is outside of the distribution area, though. It would be kind of wierd for Chinese military to fight Chinese military for no reason. If the opponent was choosen purely for training reasons I think they should be sim fighting India, Russia or the middle east as I think they will go to war with them before the US. The Pacific is too big...both the US and China can't afford to pay for a war that would cross a space that big. However, I am sure they picked US just because the US military gear some how always looks cooler when dumped into a video game. I think they go for looks over funtionality on some things.

I am amused with the YouTube comments on the video...

People don't seem to realize that China still has the largest Military in the world... and as per that video, that Military is training on this shooter by killing American soldiers.

Kinda creepy...

Modern NATO equipment looks boring. Chunky black stick after chunky black stick. Russian stuff is awesomely retro.

The FN FAL in the original wood finish is still one of my favorite rifles of all time, though I fully understand why they replaced it.
