Sapphire HD 5670 OC fail.

Thread Starter
Hey guys wondering if anyone can shed some light on a problem I am encountering.

I am currently using a budget system I have built (in my sig) and have not had any problems overclocking the CPU and memory.

I am however having issues overclocking the GPU, a Sapphire HD 5670 512mb.
the issue I am encountering I believe is what's called "artifacts" on the screen although I could be mistaken. Basically they are errors in the image I am receiving in the desktop, and these errors only ever occur when the card is OC'd. Another issue I am getting is a very poor frame rate in games when overclocked (although it's an uneven FPS issue and is more like stuttering than low FPS).

I have used ATI CCC to overclock the card, and used the auto-tune feature on this in order to try and find a stable overclock and it suggests I use 840Mhz clock and 1040MHz memory clock, however I experience the same issues I have mentioned above. (Also used MSI afterburner with the same issues).

It is important to mention that I get these artifacts even when overclocking only to 800Mhz and leaving the memory clock as it is and I have never changed the voltages on the card. What could this problem be? Am I missing something, should I be upping voltages even for slight overclocks on the card and if so how? Or could the issue lie with my extremely cheap mobo and low powered 430w PSU?

Cheers.

Im guessing its a mobo / psu problem... also you cant really change the voltage without hardware mods as far as i know.

Do you know what kind of problem it could be with those bits of hardware? i.e. a power issue or a frequency issue etc.

The auto-tune on CCC also gave me 840/1040 ... but not all games run stable at that speed ...

for example
L4D2 is 830 core stable ... thats -10 from CCC's autotune
GTA-IV is only stable when the memory is 1080 or lower... use sapphire trixx to go beyond 1050
crysis series are more sensitive ... any overclock = can't start the game

Since it's giving you artifacts u can just keep it in stock clocks.
The 5 to 20% performance boost ain't gonna make much of a difference to the 30fps I get from some demanding games.

The voltage are not selectable with software. You can use a pencil to shade it but I never tried it myself as I don't know how to operate a multimeter.

hi, is that 512mb a ddr3 or ddr5 version of 5670?

if its ddr3 the stock clock is 775 and you get artifacts already at 800.
can you post your gpuz and idle temp?

a stronger PSU would be nice, but it's not necessary for a single 5670

the heat sinks on sapphires don't cover the memory so clocking that is a pretty bad idea anyway

i wan't to say dud chip but i really need to see more temps.

tbh sapphires spin up reluctantly and too late. just keep it at 100% fan power if you're OCing with stock.

It is a DDR5 512mb version.

GPU-Z temps are at max 52 and 52.5c and idle at ~30c.

Sorry for the late reply I have been away. Cheers.

I have the 1gb DDR3 version of this GPU...

I clocked mine as high as she'll go, but after a few bsods she now Artifacts at anything over 850 / 752 - and i previously had her stable at 777 for memclock...

Not a very strong card for OC I have realised. I have managed to get it stable at 850/1050 but it still isn't 100% stable. For instance it crashes every now and again during Fallout when entering areas with a large amount to render such as New Vegas strip itself.

Using a HD6870 now anyway
