Laptop doesn't boot into Windows anymore

Thread Starter
My sister just called and told me, that her Laptop doesn't boot anymore. She suspects a virus. She has Vista Home 32 Bit as far as I know.

I told her she should try booting in safe mode. She doesn't want to do it today though. She wants to call back tomorrow evening. So I thought that leaves enough time to ask for advise.

What could be wrong, should she try to install Windows again? She says, she doesn't have a recovery CD though, just some "recovery" option during the boot process, which apparently doesn't work though.

So the only option would be to install another version of Vista or XP. I tried that with my mothers Laptop once and it didn't work. She has Vista and I wanted to install XP, since her Laptop has very weak specs. The XP ran fine it just missed some drivers or some programs that were needed and only on the recovery disk, so she wasn't able to access the internet from XP. I had to use her Vista recovery CD then.

So what could my sister try? What can she do if she's able to boot in safe mode? Could she try a system recovery? I don't think she's set any recovery points or are they set automatically? Should she run some virus scanner? Can software be installed in safe mode, if she doesn't have a virus scanner installed?

Thanks.

Try and get into safe mode is the best thing to do now; and save what data needed from the HDD; and try looking to see if there's a recovery point, then see what goes from there. IMO most likely need a reformat.

If you don't want to reformat, then it'll help if you can find out what happened before the laptop stopped booting into the OS, because there are quite a lot of things that causes a OS to stop booting and it'll be nice to find out what she did before things went wrong.

As for the new OS, considering it's a weaker laptop, XP is the way to go.
