Replacement for 5870

Thread Starter
So, i recently sent back a broken 5870 to www.cyberpower.co.uk and they cannot replace it with another 5870 due to stock. A bit disappointed, nevertheless the man at cyberpower is discussing with the supplier which card is best to replace it. Now obviously i have a say in which card i want, but not to too much extent.

The supplier offered me a 6870, but i declined as they were basically ripping me off with a FAR worse and cheaper card. So i need some advice, which card should i ask as a replacement? I rwecently asked them for a HD 6950 2GB, but is the card very loud? i have only a few things i want in a GFX card.

1. Decent framerates on 1920x1080 (around 60fps) on the latest games
2.Silence, this is hugely important, the 5870 got very loud under load (it was a Powercolor PCS+).
3. Price, i need the card to be the same price (or around that price) i live in england so if you could quote GBP that would be awesome.

Thanks in advance

Actually....a 6870 is a slight improvement over the 5870 and in crossfire they do scale better than the 5000 series cards. 2 6870s are a decent amount better than 2 5870s. I would take it but if you can get them to bump you to a 6950 then I would try for it for sure.

actually single 5870 outperform single 6870, but 6870CF scales better than 5870CF.
Ask your vendor for 6950 1gb as a replacement.

Yep your right, a 6870 is better than a 5850 not 5870. Had a brain fart. So yea, push for the 6950.

Ok, not looking for crossfire though, dont feel like doubling the noise. Anyone know how loud these cards get?

I'm not too sure which of the current high end card's offers the best combination of performance/quietness.

Check out the techpowerup.com for video cards reviews. You'll see noise levels. I personally love asus direct cu II cooling because it's very quiet. Ask your vendor if you can add little more money and get something better?

in AMD's report said that 6870 performs a little worse than 5870, maybe NV's high-end card will be better if you wanna upgrade it, I do like GIGABYTE's GTX580 with the windforceII cooler.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'm going to try and push my supplier for an Asus GTX 570 direct CU II card. I found one for the same price as a 5870, hopefully they'll have one and accept.

The HD5870 is overpriced dude. The HD6870 is basically a HD5870 at a more realistic price and it's faster especially in DX11.
