DirectX 11 API is already quite a mature piece of software that has been with us for a couple of years. Unfortunately for end-users its actual implementation in real life applications has been slow. But recently Blizzard has officially released its World of Warcraft: Cataclysm 4.1 Patch, which should attract just that bit more attention to this. Read on to find out why.

Testbed and Methods - We are going to investigate World of Warcraft: Cataclysm graphics performance using the following universal testbed:

Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Edition processor (3.33 GHz, 6.4 GT/s QPI);
Scythe SCKTN-3000 Katana 3 CPU cooler;
Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme mainboard (Intel X58 Express chipset);
Corsair XMS3-12800C9 (3 x 2 GB, 1333 MHz, 9-9-9-24, 2T);
Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD (1 TB, 32 MB buffer, SATA II);
Ultra X4 850 W modular power supply;
Dell 3007WFP monitor (30", 2560x1600 @ 60 Hz max display resolution);
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit;
Nvidia GeForce 270.61 for Nvidia GeForce;
ATI Catalyst 11.4 for Radeon HD.

I like how you talk about how WoW graphics are terrible even though you play minecraft smile.gif

(im not saying minecraft is a bad game)

If they were to knock the shadows down just 1 or 2 notches their fps would literally double with virtually no visual difference.
My old 9600gt and e5200 could hold 45-60 fps at 1080p in the unpopulated areas they were testing in.

The real test comes when you enter a city or do a 25man raid.

lol It's one hell of a difference if you pay attention to the change in shadow resolution, particularly the edge detail. Besides, it all depends on the graphics card.. Changing the shadow setting effects me by maybe 10 fps from min to max.

Not much when it's already 100-200 fps

Btw WoW does use more than 2 cores, and can support SLI when forced via the control panel. And yes, it does yield an increase in fps.

Like I always say, the only thing worse than an intelligent person with an ego is someone who THINKS they're intelligent and has an ego.

First of all, World of Warcraft does allow utilization for more than 2 cores as well as it does support SLI and CF setups. Since the game is very CPU dependent, added performance from those setups are rarely seen.

The only thing you were right about is the bottleneck, but even then I'm fairly sure it was by luck and not because you actually understand how anything works. rolleyes.gif

Simple=/=bad.

Minecraft was intended that way.

WoW is simply outdated.

Period.

I'm amused that my HD5870 pushes FAR more FPS on NFS Shift than what a GTX590 does in WoW.
