$1500 gaming build

Thread Starter

This is my first time building a pc. I just want to know if everything I have listed is good. Please give advice if you feel there are other items that outperform what i chose.

Budget range: $1500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, browsing, movies

Country of Origin: US

Overclocking: I've never done it before, but i plan on doing it in the near future

SLI or Crossfire: in the near future. I had a question about crossfire. Will it be overkill if i crossfire with 2 unlocked radeon 6950 with 1 monitor?( the monitor I plan on using is listed below). The monitor I will use is a 1920x1080 2ms @ 60hz. Now from what I understand, correct me if I'm wrong, the 60hz will display 60fps max. so is crossfire really necessary? what are the benefits?

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

My set up:

cpu: http://www.directron.com/bx80623i52500k.html $224

mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-730-_-Product $210

gpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...scrollFullInfo $280
I will unlock this as well

memory:

$95

psu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139011 $135

cpu cooler: http://us-dc2-order.store.yahoo.net/...myD1AszJwdAA-- $75

case: http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/...er_id=!ORDERID! $180

hdd: http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/...er_id=!ORDERID! $55

burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335 $26

monitor: http://www.frys.com/product/6427442 $220

Your build looks good actually. Its pretty beefed up for a higher end gamer. No doubt. I like your choices, the only thing I have to say is that, you wont need alot of ram unless you run so many things at once. 4gb is the average surfer, gamer. 6gb is more than enough in my opinion. 8gb is definitely overkill.

And my last comment to you is that, I would rather go with water cool for my CPU. I'd recommend the h50 since its just so good at cooling when overclocked and its much cheaper now. However, i do know that the one you choose does a decent job as well.

good luck with the build!

Yet the Corsair Vengence is the best DDR3 ram out there...

And this is OCN... If you think his build is excessive, well... this is OCN, this is what we do.

lol at the ram comment its less than 100 for ram whats the problem. Its not worth saving 20-40 to get less.

You can get more then 60 frames with a 60hz monitor i dont think they relate like that unless vsync or some kind of frame locking is involved, correct me if im wrong.

I just read it somewhere and I wanted to check if there is any truth to it. I kinda want them just because I thinking it be awesome, but I dont want them if I'm not gonna see the performance through my monitor.

Also, what does crossfire increase besides fps

^The 60fps limit on 60hz monitors is incorrect.

Anyways, this build looks great! I would recommend getting a small SSD boot drive though, especially with the new SATA III SSD's coming out, the older SATA II's will be getting much cheaper -- plus you're getting a Z68 mobo so take advantage of the SSD caching.

Crossfired 6950's will be overkill for just one monitor. If anything I'd save that money now and maybe get a nicer PSU (the one you have is great, but for $20ish more you can get a fully modular AX850).

Good CPU cooler as well, and it will outperform the H50 as recommended above. NCIX has a deal on the Noctua NH-D14 right now for $60 - it performs the same as the Silver Arrow you've chosen. Or you can wait for Corsairs new H80 and H100, and decide what you want at that point (the bad thing about the two above air coolers is that they block the first RAM slot -- not sure if the Vengeance RAM you've chosen will be affected or now).

Sorry for the long ass post lol.
