Safe liquid

Thread Starter
So here I am again, with more questions, but just wanna make sure I get things right.
For my next question.. Most people told me not to get or use colored coolant as it may eventually clog.
Most have suggested distilled water as well as biocide and killcoils, 1st off does biocide and killcoils do the same thing? I would also presume distilled water would fry my system if there was any leak. Is there any safe non conductive clear fluids that I can use? I've almost finished my ordering, again just wanna make sure I get things right..

Also if I do use distilled water.. I'm assuming I could get this locally rather than ordering correct..

Thanks again and again,
Nick

Yes you could get it local. Any grocery store should have it next to the bottled water.

Yes, they both kill bacterial / algal growth.

Not necessarily; straight distilled water is not very conductive. So long as you miss your PSU you might even get away without any damage.

Yep. Distilled water.

In itself it is non-conductive, however over time it will pick up contaminants which lead to it becoming conductive. The same goes for any premixed "non-conductive" coolants you can buy.

Yes, pretty much any grocery store will sell it for about $2/gal.

just had my second leak this month from a failing GPU block (now replaced)

The soundcard sits directly underneith and so over time got soaked, and surprisingly still worked flawlessly inspite of having a puddle of coolant on it.

This is the second time this has happend. I've been lucky yes, but just because you get a leak doesn't necessarily mean all is lost. it just depends on what components get wet.

I only use distilled water mixed with automotive anti-freeze (cos it's blue, and hell, i can use it below 0 degrees )

I wouldn't ever believe any marketing hype over a coolant being "non-conductive". even if it isn't, over time it will be.

Unless you put your radiator in an icebox it will never drop below 0C... OP distilled water with PT-Nuke or a Killcoil is the best way to go. I've had quite a bit of water spill on my GPU and mobo without it dieing but that was only while it was off.

- Colored coolant in itself doesn't clog. Sometimes, if too much dye had been used or if the dye separates from the coolant, it may cause some clogging or discoloration.

- Killcoils is a silver coil and silver is a natural biocide (along with ash and some other stuff). Biocide like Copper II Sulfate are chemical biocides that will also do the same thing. You can use them together.

- Distilled water conducts very little, but will still conduct. Add that with whatever metal flakes it picked up from components and the dust around, it has the potential to become a very conductive coolant.

- There are plenty of non-conductive fluids out there that are clear; Feser, Primochill, and Fluid XP are a few. That being said, all non-conductive fluids eventually become conductive overtime. It just helps minimize initial leak risks.

For pity's sake, don't get Fluid XP. Skinnee did a coolant test, XP Nanofluid didn't perform very well at all:

As for the rest, they are mostly just distilled plus biocide anyway, at 5x the price.

Wow thank you very much for all the info guys. Like I said I'm a noob with WC and this will be my 1st ever build or even research into it. So if there was a non conductive fluid that would have minimized the risk... well I just have way to much cash put into this rig.
As yes I do read quite a few threads about problems, leaks or so on in comparison to how many people actually WC I'm sure the leaks are actually not that common and I'm willing to bet a good percentage of the ones that even do leak are caused by the person and not the equipment.
I'm really on the fence here between the rx240 and 360. As the 360 I'm sure is clearly the better choice especially for an extra $20 I think it would be much more difficult to work into my antec 1200.

I'd get the RX 360. It's a bit larger, but will have some headroom for adding a GPU later. If not, you can at least run your fans at a lower RPM.

Yeah, about leaks. Well, I did have one during my leak test - and it wasn't from anything I'd thought would leak (i.e., unions between fitting + component). It was from the reservoir. After fixing that there were no leaks. So, just make sure you run a leak test and check places which you might not expect leak.

About the coolant...well, I use distilled + silver because it seemed to have the least amount of maintenance. If there truly were a non-conductive fluid with good thermal conductivity and low cost, and if it could somehow "avoid" becoming conductive I'd use that. But, there isn't one that I know of, so I just use the distilled.

EDIT TO ADD: I'm not sure but I believe the RX kit comes with a bracket so you could mount the RX 360 externally if you wanted. Otherwise, you could get a bracket like the EK Uni Bracket 120 to mount the radiator externally to a fan hole.
