CM Hyper 212+ and i7 930 @ 4.0ghz

Thread Starter
This has probably been posted before but my searches yielded no results so here it is.

I've been pushing my OC up slowly & have become nice & stable at 3.8ghz but noticed my max load temps hitting the mid 70s & was wondering if my cooler can take anything more if I've reached the limits of this lovely little cooler. I really would like to push it to 4ghz but not sure if my cooler can take the heat (yuck yuck yuck ).

I will say when I mounted this cooler I used the stock CM TIM that came with the cooler. I've heard it's pretty good stuff but I think I'm going to need to squeak every degree from it I can. Also I'm SURE I royally screwed up the application. I'm sure the surface of my CPU will look like a bagel with fresh spread on it.

I picked up some Artic MX-4 and am planning on removing, cleaning & remounting the cooler with this stuff & properly this time & hope it'll make something of a difference as I doubt the heat transfer is happening at anywhere near the efficiency it can/should.

Any thoughts on any/all of those points (cooler potential, screwed up TIM application, new TIM I'll be applying)?

Thanks!

Well, with my Silver Arrow on my 930 at 3.8, I'm hitting 64-65 on the hottest core in IBT and Prime95. Ambient is 24-25, so you're looking at around 40 degrees above ambient. I'm using the Chillfactor III that came with it for TIM. I remounted several times with Shin-Etsu and AS5 and actually got the best results with the Chillfactor. I think the Silver Arrow is somewhat better than your cooler, but I wouldn't think 10 degrees better. Are you using one or two fans on that and which fans are you using? Your cooler has the heat pipes that directly touch the cpu, so I think you have to first fill the cracks/gaps, scrape off the excess, then apply TIM like you would on any other cpu/heatsink. Small vertical grain of rice or 5 mm dot in the center of the CPU IHS. I hesitate to recommend a TIM as I don't want to start a flame war, but most of the good ones are within a degree or two of each other....Noctua, AS-5, MX-3/4, Chillfactor III, Shin-Etsu....

Edit: Forgot to ask, what CPU voltage? That will greatly affect temps.

@Defender,

breenemeister is correct in saying that you need to fill the cracks or spaces between the hdt cooler but instead of the usual rice grain application, the best method is to spread the TIM along the middle 3 pipes. All hyper 212+ owners including myself have tried different methods and by far the best one that will get you better temps would be what I just mentioned.

EDIT: When I mean spread, I meant to apply a thin line of about half an inch in length parallel and in the middle of the pipes on the bottom of the cooler.

I hit my limit with the Hyper 212+ on my 920 at 4ghz. I get mid 70s as well when using prime and even hit the 80s when the ambient hits 30-36*C. With my chip, to run prime stable I have to set the vcore to 1.31v. I'm sure this is contributing to a lot of the extra heat.

I recently threw some MX-4 on the processor using the 3 line method in between the copper heat pipes. I used to be a card spreader, but I think the line method worked out better for me. Dropped my idle temps about 6*C.

Wish I could push it more, but the hyper 212+ has done a good enough job for a $30 heatsink. Eventually, I'm planning to go to a custom water loop, but I'll have to wait until things improve economically.

40 degrees? Not sure what you mean. That 70s number was at full load. More like the low/mid 30s for idle temps. Have a look at this. It's at full load while running prime95/testing stability. I believe this was around 6+ hrs at full load. Will also list my voltages.

Also, anyone able to come up with a visual on the TIM application. I think I know what you mean but i'm not 100%.

Thanks all!

[Edit] Actually I think that screenshots from 3.6ghz. I'll need to double check it when I get home.

I said my temps were 40 degrees above ambient temperature. The cpu runs 65, but ambient temp is 25. 40 degrees is how much hotter the cpu gets at load than the air temp of the room.

Also, sorry to step on you CM Hyper 212+ guys TIM application. I was going by memory. You guys are the masters on this.

Ahh, I got ya breen, sorry.

Here's my most recent shots. This is at idle & full load in a relatively cool room (70ish F perhaps cooler).

Also, turning off HT will reduce the strain/heat generation right? I have very little if any use for it, the only thing that'll tax this machine is gaming.

Oh man, turning off HT certainly makes a lovely difference. Full load It's pushing 64c atm. HT not very useful on a gaming rig, right?
