To OC or not to OC... that is the question...

Thread Starter
So I built this computer for about $1400. At first I was very excited to get into overclocking, of course knowing almost nothing about it.

I've learned a few things since. First is that heat is the enemy, and my cooler doesn't put up a very good fight (oh, and my funds for "playing with that stupid computer" as the wide says are exhausted). Trying out various OC profiles, some of my own invention, some from others successful OC's, I couldn't get over the temps. When I run prime95 and start to see those temps creep past 70C slowly (and idle around 50C @ 4.0ghz), I can't help but feel that I am killing my CPU, or at least taking years off its life.

Then it really hit that I was doing this for the "bravado" factor more than anything else. Even at stock, I have never been able to find something it is that I do that this CPU can't handle.

So long story short, I decided for now to undervolt the thing (everything else stock), and now it never goes above 60C under 100% load.

I may decided to OC in the future, but not until I can afford much better cooling. Call me anal but temps of 70C+, hitting 80C under 100% load just plain make me cringe.

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice, back to lurking for me for the most part .

There is no game / apps that can stress your CPU as much as Prime. So take Prime to the maximum heat supported by your CPU and then you'll know that your CPU will be running below its maximum heat when gaming.

No?

Electronic components are supposed to perform under high heat (e.g. televisions)

Nowadays OC'ing is basically more because you can and not because you would really see much improvement. Back when computers ran at a few hundred mhz, or even lower overclocking made a nice improvement. Overclocking now really just helps number crunching programs for folding, encoding and the like.

Did you try staying at 4.0 and backing the voltage down by single increments? The Dark Knight is a pretty decent cooler and should let you safely hit 4.0.

If you're able to stay just above 70 °C during stress tests, that really isn't bad.

Any application or games that can get benefit from OC?
If there aren't any, why bother OC?
I overclock my Pentium E5800 because it is slow.
But I don't overclock my Xeon X3440 (which is still slower than Core i7 950) because it is already fast enough.

If heat is your enemy but you still want to overclock, why don't you overclock it to safe speed where you don't need extra volts. It should be somewhere between 3.4 - 3.6 GHz. You can extra performance without adding to much heat and (wasted) power consumption.
