Car Stereo Recommendations??

Thread Starter
I know this isn't exactly home audio but there isn't any other section that I can find. And you never know cuz some people might be living in a van down by the river so car stereo is home audio. BUT my VW Golf has a messed up stereo and it's time to replace it. I don't really know much about car stereos and what's good and what's bad so I'm looking to take some recommendations. Here are a few requirements:
- CD Player
- Aux cable

Budget is preferably below $100.

I bought mine the wrong way - walked into Best Buy and came out a while later with it and the installation stuff. Saved some of the wasted money by installing it myself, though.

Going to a local store, even a Best Buy, isn't a bad bet, since you can get a hands-on with many units. Then you can look around for a good deal with a better idea of what you want.

It's not entirely relevant, but mine is a Kenwood with CD/AUX/USB/HD. I like it, even though I don't use most of the inputs... ever.

I do believe that unit lacks the AUX input he asked for. Don't get me wrong, its an okay unit...but its SUCH a budget, entry level unit.

Get the Pioneer DEH-3200UB. Much better unit, and still under $100.

You will need a wiring harness and dash kit as well. You will likely want to just visit your local mom / pop audio shop for that. Wal Mart does carry a few that should work as well, as does Best Buy (but they're expensive).

It did have a front Aux, but even then you can find models under a hundred that have USB which I would a million times more useful, such as the one you posted.

With USB you can pop a flash drive in there and control the music from your stereo, rather than have to worry about charging your devices, or having to pick them up every time you want to change a song, which is also dangerous while driving.

USB is pretty awesome. Pick up an 8/16GB drive for cheap and have all the music you want right there.

The model is a 2002 Volkswagon Golf TDI. I've put in a stereo before but it was simply replacing an aftermarket deck with another aftermarket deck in a 1986 4Runner. I'm not really sure how it's going to work since this is the original factory deck. And when you say I'm going to need a wiring harness, how far is that extend? Like the last deck I replaced was a simple unplug then plug in and I really would love to just do that again.

The reason for the USB is simply so that I can charge my iPod as I go. My iPod itself has around 20000 songs on it so I'm not too worried. Especially since I've been using the cassette-aux cable thingy for the past few years and haven't had any issues.

The process just involves connecting wires between two brackets and hooking it up to your speaker/power wires and the stereo. It's not too bad. The hardest part for me was getting the dashboard plastic off and getting the mounting plate installed right.

Well, there's a FEW things that will be different this time around.
1) You will likely need a dash kit. Your factory radio is likely going to be a larger than standard size stereo. They almost always are. So you'll need a dash kit that fits with your dash, looks nice, and gives you a DIN spot to work with. This will just bolt to the stereo, and then bolt into place on the dash.

2) The wiring kit. This is essential for a clean installation, and ease of installation. What this does, is it plugs into your factory wiring harness, and gives you bare wires to hook up to the stereo. They will all be marked so you'll know EXACTLY which wire goes where. No having to guess which is power, which is left, etc. They'll all be marked, so then you just connect with connectors (or tape), and go.

Replacing a factory head unit with an aftermarket is a piece of cake. Just get those two things (dash and wiring kits) and you'll be just fine. The dash kit and wiring kits are usually under $20 each.

That sounds great pioneer. My only last question has to do with music source. I know on my friends car if the USB and Aux are both plugged in it automatically uses the USB and it controls it from the deck as opposed to the iPod (choosing songs). Do you know if these are the same way or if I can just switch sources? I'm not sure if you've had personal experience with these or not. And Pioneer, would rep but can't.
