i5 2500K decaying :o

Hey.


I've now been running 5GHz 1.424V for about 1month.

Few days ago, I was folding overnight and woke up to a 0x0000124 BSOD. :O
I then turned it up 0.5V and folded overnight - same. I had to give it: 1.44V just to get it to not BSOD, ran a 12 hours p95 and it was stable..

SO after 1 month at 1.424V it needed such an increase..

I've been folding once in a while, gaming and surfing/watching movies. Thats what I've been doing. I've noticed a increase in temperature (Althought that might be because it's beginning to be warmer). Never got over 60c when gaming or folding. Only prime95 it got to 71C after 12 hours.


Now I will be running 4.5GHz instead at 1.28V which I still hope it can (It could 24/7 just when I bought it..)

- Anyone else been experiencing the same?

Mine's doing something similar. For 4.8GHz on my Biostar board, it took 1.39v. But on my Asus board it's taking 1.44v. However the board swap is what initiated that change. So I don't think mine degraded at all, but the boards operate a little differently.

I really doubt you degraded your chip within a month at such little vcore. You probably just weren't fully stable.

Have you by any chance overclocked your memory past 1600mhz? If so, you probably need to increase your VCCIO voltage, not your VCC. I had to do the same thing when increasing my memory frequency from 1600mhz to 1866mhz.

I'd think the below picture shows that it was stable :/
I also ran LinX and IBT at the time.

My memory is 2000mhz CL9 normally, and I took them down to 1866mhz since they wouldn't run 2000mhz

They wouldn't run 2000mhz because you probably haven't increased the VCCIO voltage. Try bumping that to around 1.1-1.15v. You should easily be able to run 2000mhz with that, and that *might* fix your stability issues.

Okay, so you ran Prime for 12 hours. What settings? I can pass for 12 hours just fine with Small FFT's or blended just fine with 1.39v still. It requires a "Custom" blend forcing almost all my RAM to make mine BSOD with a 124 error. GTA IV seems to cause that error quite quickly too.

Instead of decay it could be just an increase in temperature like you explained. When stress testing its always best to test it at a high ambient temp so you know its truly stable and can survive the summer months.

They are high, but that's what's required for a multiplier as high as x50. The chip is most definitely not degrading as others are saying, it's too soon. Even at that voltage it would I believe take a few years to degrade, at least two? I'm speculating, really.

On topic, if an overclock is unstable it won't necessarily show signs immediately. For example, I had my 2600k running 1.26v @ 4.5. It ran rine without hiccups for a good two weeks, but then decided it was going to BSOD endlessly. I had to bump the core voltage to 1.35v to solve this.

You just gotta fool around with your settings, if you feel that your core voltage is high enough and it's not core voltage, it's probably the memory needing more voltage.
