Zalman MFC-3 Fan Controller Help

Thread Starter
Hi OCN I just need to get your opinion on something I recently bought me the Zalman MFC-3 Fan Controller Its pretty neat with the Active Wattage Meter and The uptime

ZM-MFC3_m.jpg

Here is the wiring diagram below, the question I ask is that from the fan header no 1 there is a Y cable here to power 2 fan's. The manual states that if I was only to power one fan with this cable to hook it up to the white plug not the blue plug as the blue plug on its own wont allow me to control speed.

This is fine I have 2 fans hooked up to it what I am wanting to ask is do you think I can hook up a Y splitter cable to the end of Cable No 3 The single 3Pin Header as I also want to control 2 fans of this header? Would it be Ok? would it fry my fan controller? Does the controller have enough power to run 6 fans? would they both only spin at half speed or would it be ok?

and Lastly can I plug in a 3pin fan into cable number 4 the pwm 4pin connection? as I may do away with my Corsair H50 pwm fan for 2x3pin fans with better static pressure.

It has a maximum of 12w per channel so you'll have no problem running 2 fans off each. And I can't see why you can't use a 3pin cable on the PWM channel. I nearly got one of those but went for a Lamptron FC-5 v2 instead (30w per channel)

Does your Corsair work when plugeg to the PWM output ?

I am right now building my new PC with 3 pins fan assigned to (1 : 230mm intake, 2 : 120mm intake, 3 : two Corsair's 120mm push for H100 so exhaust) and I would like to put the H100 to the PWM of the Zalman but don't know if that good or not (I don't have any PWM fan at all).

I don't think that speed of a 3-pin fan can be adjusted if it is connected to channel 4, that channel only adjusts PWM signal, voltage is always at 12 V.

I don't need to adjust the speed of the pump of the H100, I would just love to use the four outputs of the MFC-3 and also read the rpm of the pump on it.

The problem is that the pump has a 5.25" molex (only +12v and ground) and there is a separate 3 pin fan connector (with only one wire for the rpm reading) so I would need an adapter to fit it to the MFC3 (if that's possible).

For monitoring only channel 4 should be ok. But it might be better to connect pump's rpm signal to motherboard cpu fan header so you can make system alarm/shutdown if pump is not running.

The C3 cable which is included with the ZM-MFC3 might be useful to have the rpm measure sent to the mainboard and the ZM-MFC3.

I don't know if that's a good idea or not... someone who know the Corsair really well told me I cannot connect it to the ZM-MFC3 but we might have a little misunderstanding there :

I don't see any problems if you are only connecting rpm wire and you have 12 V and GND wires connected straight to PSU.

I'll try it as soon as I got my CPU :-)

Thanks.
