Running Linux off a usb

Thread Starter
So I'm a Linux virgin, and lately I've been more interested in using it. I have a netbook, which currently has Win7 on it, I take it to school but I share it at home, so any changes as such would be devastating. I read somewhere you can run Linux completely off a USB, without affecting the Windows install. How is this possible, and how do I go about doing this?

Thanks!

Seconded, an awesome app

I'd recommend Linux Mint though if you're new, it's more of an "out of the box" solution, it'll work with less messing around

Yep! Especially if you havent used linux before.

Check out "Unetbootin"

Lets you boot most linux distros from USB.

It's very good, but doesn't have Flash support builtin (and, if memory serves, lacks mp3 support out-of-the-box - might be video support though)

UNetBootin used to be the gold standard, but I switched the LLUC earlier this year as I found it to have the same basic functionality, with the added bonus of persistance. UNetBootin, by default, isn't persistant - it just extracts a LiveCD to a USB stick

Hold up, this is being booted in a VM? This might change the ballgame altogether....

Can you not reboot the whole PC, with the flash drive inserted (where it should boot Linux, assuming the BIOS is set to check the HDD last in the boot order)

Only if they fixed unity or they have a UNR version that doesn't use it. Been hearing a bit of complaints about negative performance from Ubuntu 11.04

If you really want a true flash drive OS then you should look to something like Porteus
