HD 5850 OC stable in Furmark, but not BC2

Hello, fng here with a question...

As you can see from my specs, I run a single HD 5850 OC'd from 765/1125 @ 1.087 volts to 1000/1200 @ 1.275 volts.

I've benched it at these specs, and burned it with Furmark for 1 hour without a single hiccup. And now my problem...

Despite being rock solid at these settings in Furmark and Kombustor, Battlefield Bad Company 2 tends to lock up within a 5-25 minute window after I begin playing. So my question is, what could BC2 possibly be doing that Furmark doesn't? I methodically check my temps while playing, CPU is in the mid 50s and GPU never gets above 65C. CPU is rock solid too, Prime95 for 24 hours no errors.

Granted, I play BC2 with evvvvverything at max:
Detail/Texture/Shadow/Effects Quality all on High
AA 8x MSAA
Anisotrophic Filter 16x
Vsync Off
HBAO (on or off I still crash, whatever this setting is)
I average about 80 FPS with these settings while OC'd.

Furmark I run without AA and other such settings, could this be the cause of it? I alternate between Bad Company 2 and Starcraft 2, I can play SC2 at these settings for hours on end without crashing, even with hundreds of units on screen at one time.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Oh, my card is unflashed, original bios.

P.S. I get about 500 FPS in Minecraft rolleyes.gif

Are you using MSI afterburner to OC? Bad Company 2 has a conflict (actually it might be Punkbuster but don't quote me) with some versions of AB, so that may be the cause of your lock ups instead of an unstable overclock.

Indeed I am, thanks for enlightening me, time to look for an alternate program to control my voltage and fan speeds.

You can still use AB just don't have it running, it will still apply the settings when it is closed. BC2 I found harder on my system then any other benchmark or game though, it could simply be your OC is unstable with BC2. Definitely try closing AB first though.

Edit: By closed I don't mean running in the system tray, close it right down, it will still apply overclocks.

Sadly I just tried this, crashed in the middle of a very promising game. So that's ruled out, but thanks for the input.

I had the same problem. I lowered the clocks a bit last night and haven't had any problems since. Apparently I got a crappy 5850 for overclocking.

I've tried 950/1200, 900/1150 and 850/1150 at various voltage levels, all crash in BC2 after an ever changing amount of time, but I almost never complete a full game.

Now granted, even at stock my card runs BC2 at over 60 FPS in even the most heated situations WITHOUT crashing, so it begs the question of why I overclock. I like to try my hand at frapsing my best moments and my FPS takes a major hit when I do, but OC'd I still hover over 30 FPS even while filming, without the OC it becomes nigh unplayable (high teens to low 20s).

try using an old version of MSI AB..older ones..this solved the issue with mine..i now use AB 2.0 not the newer beta..you can also try if the AB 1.6 has no issues for you..

AB can definitely still be used, as long as it is not running in the background and won't cause you any problems. BC2 has many reasons for crashing, including unstable overclocks. It is also very temperamental with 64bit operating systems, and I have heard it can help to run the game in Administrator mode too.

Really the game is very buggy and unfortunately you may not be able to completely fix your problems, but you should be able to minimize them.
