DIR-615 issues

Thread Starter
Just bought a brand new DIR-615 from newegg for 40$ shipped. i'm none too thrilled that it wasn't as easy as i thought (and d-linked suggested) it would be.

setup: motorola surfboard SB5101 -> D-Link DGS-2208 -> DIR-615 (linked back to the switch).

i can connect to the router, but the router is a dead stump essentially- it says it's fine, but it can't ping anything at all.

any ideas/suggestions/comments/free routers ?

Wait. So the Motorola is your Modem.
What in the world is the D-Link doing?

the DGS-2208 is just a gigabit switch. the DIR-615 is to supply wireless and DHCP.

Put the DIR-615 before the switch, not after the switch.

before? as such: modem -> router -> switch -> other things ?

Yes. That's generally how home networks work.
Why would you put the router after the switch?

when my linksys router was in use, it was just like this. one cable into the router from the switch ('internet') and one out of the router back into in the switch.

(using the modem straight into my computer at the moment)

modem -> router doesn't work out at all. the 'web' LED is orange (bad).

modem -> switch -> router -> switch works... somewhat. the 'web' LED is green (good).

You generally never want anything connected straight to the modem. That's why you generally put the switch AFTER the router and not before it.

Try taking the switch out of the equation and see if you can start pinging things etc.
So make it Modem > Router

Go modem to router, unplug power to modem AND dir-615 reboot BOTH.
I have this same router.
