Flash suggestions

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I'm looking at flashes for my Nikon D3000. But since I don't really have any experience with them, I'd like to get your input.
Any brands in particular I should look at / avoid? Any metering systems that are better than others ect.?

I do have some requirement, it must be able to articulate the flash itself (I don't know if this is even an issue anymore, but my 15+ yo flash, is fixed forward facing), must be able to mount diffusors.
And it doesn't have to cost a billion dollars xD

The Nikon SB-600 is a very good flash. You can move it all the way around and adjust the angle of the flash as well. I think I paid $225 for mine at Best Buy.

SB-600's are 1655DKR (thats $315 US). Seems reasonable enough
I really like the fact that it can turn the flashes head around the base.

Pretty sure the SB-600 has been discontinued. I think it's been replaced with the SB-700 for about the same price ( $319 ). I could be wrong on it being an actual replacement though. Adorama has refurb SB-600's for $280; thinking about going that route myself.

get sb-700 over the 600, it's awesome.

rotates like you asked and it literally comes with all the flash accessories you'd want. it comes boxed with omni-bounce, built-in bounce, cto, and ctg, and best of all, the sb-700 sends your camera the information if they're being used so you don't even have to touch white balance.

Keep in the mind that the SB600 can't tilt the full 360 degrees, it's blind spot is from 3 'o clock to 6 'o clock.

While I don't have any experience with external flashes I wouldn't buy something that is discontinued unless you're getting a hella deal. If the difference between the remaining SB-600s and SB-700 is marginal in your area, I would go with the SB-700.

Hopefully the 430 Mk III and 580 Mk III will have these accessories as well, then there will be less of a need to buy overpriced Sto-Fen products.
