4870 component cooling

G'day

I've found lately that the heatsink on the rear of my card (presumably covering the power regulation side of things) was getting extremely hot, probably a good reason for random crashes here and there while gaming/no OC'ing performance at all, even 5 mhz past stock causes crashes.

Anyway, heres a pic, i pulled the heatsink off (rebuilding my WC'ing loop).
The part covered is directly inline with the gold heatsink in the picture (the little cluster of mofsets).



Now ive got a collection of little heatsinks from a kit that i was going to use to cool them hopefully better but ive got 2 main questions

1: Do you think i should keep the stock heatsink and replace the sticky "thermal pad" with proper TIM since its locked down somewhat tightly with those locking pins as opposed to stuck on, which is what the aftermarket heatsinks will be.

2: If i put my own cooling on, which parts definitely need cooling, obviously the mofsets where the heatsink was, but i also spy another set of mofsets (sasme numbers on top as others) up near the top of the card which are completely uncooled at stock aswell as 5 on the back of the card (which are mounted pretty much in the exact position as the 4 next to the grey box's and the one closet to the power connector at the top), should these be cooled also? or would they be used for something else?

All i know is that entire area, front and back gets blistering hot, just need to know what components i should be focusing on

That's the VRM cooler you're looking at. I wouldn't try TIM, as most VRMs are never cooled like that since they have circuit legs that can contact the heatsink and short out. I would use thermal pads on it only, BUT, I noticed you have a waterblock on the GPU. If so, you may want to check these out. Problem would be solved.

The heatsinks I've got are actually a kit that's made for the stock PCB of the 4870, made to go with a certain aftermarket cooler, it came with thermal adhesive, so I'd be using that to stick the heatsinks on, or thermal tape (what would be better out of the two?)

Would the thermal adhesive or tape on the stock heatsink be better than using smaller single aftermarket heatsinks

I'm not interested in big waterblocks/full coverage blocks, I don't intend on keep the card much longer, and the PCB on this powercolor card is a non reference PCB so things made for the 4870 tend not to fit

But yeah what about the extra few bits which aren't cooled by anything worth cooling those or are they not apart of the main power system of the card (ie switch low power/currents and don't get hot?)

Since the heat sink is passive cooling the VRMs, your best bet is to place a fan over the card or have air directed at the heatsink. Also, if the heatsinks are clipped on, then use thermal pads of the correct thickness. Fujipoly is supposed to be good I heard. But the main thing to do is have air cool the card.

Well im also changing the 800D's stock 140mm fans to higher CFM fans, i got a really high CFM 120mm fan im gonna try and mock up a mount under the gfx card against the PCI slot mounts, but yeah i thought bigger heatsinks would provide a little better general cooling performance? i'd leave the stock one on there but once the loops full its a bit of a ***** to change
