Best Storage for HTPC media

Thread Starter
I have just built 3 HTPC's for my house and was wondering what is the best way to access media for my HTPC's? I have about 6 TB worth of media that's currently sitting on my desktop that I'd like to be able to store, access and organize so viewing from any of the HTPC's is easy and efficient. Is there a sort of media organizer software that would allow me to view all my media via network from any of my HTPC's and stream or download? I'd also like to have the ability from any HTPC while viewing the files to see movie covers and maybe descriptions or something of that nature. I'm running Windows 7 64 Premium home on all my computers. If anyone has any ideas or uses something simliar to what I'm looking for please point me in the right direction.

have you tried windows media center? because it is free, it might be a little less feature-rich than some of the pay ones, but you can basically set it up with media folders and then use the UI to browse through your different media (music, movies, tv shows, etc.)

I am using my xbox 360 right now mated to my gaming rig vie Extender (easy process assuming they are on the same network), so i can watch and control all the media on my PC via my 360, which includes all my ripped dvds, tv shows, mp3s. you can use your htpc and access the media folders on your other PC's (where media is stored), and play it over your network.

Windows media center should already be on your Win 7 PC.

Yea, everything is on the same network. I'll check out media center, My only concern with that is lack of features, ie. seach, meta tags and ratings. I'm not sure if media center would provide that so I never really looked further. I don't have any problem paying for something that will do what I want it to do either.

XBMC. On that forum somewhere is a way to share everything on the computers, and you can even access trailers, discriptions, and search your movies by actor! There's even an app so you can watch a movie in one room, then pause, then start where you left in another room. Pretty cool. Good luck!!

What do you need ratings for? It's your own movies, not like netflix is reading that giving you suggestions on what to rip next

But basic media sharing will get you what you need, as for having the movie covers show up, I'm fairly certain Windows Media Center can do it depending on the format of the rips and such.

i believe you can embed pictures of the movie (movie posters) and ratings into the windows media center files... just like itunes basically.

i suppose this makes it more like a catalogue

You can't embed those into files (unless you use the wtv format). What most programs do is place posters, backdrops and metadata in the same folder as the video. Others, like Media Browser, store the metadata in its ProgramData folder.

Hmmm....This looks very cool. I believe it's what I'm looking for. I'm guessing one computer acts like the host and the other computers share off the host system using this program then?
