Booting impossible when DVD drive is connected

Thread Starter
This has been happening for the past two weeks now. When my DVD drive is connected to my computer, I'll never boot properly. My computer gets stuck at the part where it says "Starting Windows". Even if I do manage to boot up and log in, the computer gets hanged within 5-10 mins. My DVD-RW drive's manufacturer is Samsung.
Up until this, I've used this drive for a year without any problems. What seems to be the problem here? Some help Would be appreciated

Can you boot to a Windows 7 installation DVD using this drive? Or, any bootable disc really.

Sounds like your boot priority isn't right. Is the hard drive where your OS is stored set as the first boot device?

If his booting priority were not right, then Windows would still load just fine because the motherboard would look for a bootable disc, not find one, and then keep moving on to the next boot device (it searches for something bootable and boots to the first bootable device it finds).

As of right now, it's loading Windows and he even sometimes gets all the way to the desktop. So, an incorrect boot order wouldn't allow for that (that is, if a disc were actually in the DVD drive that is not bootable).

I mean, it sounds like the drive is either dying, the cable could be bad, or maybe it's some other strange problem that only happens when the drive is connected (that is, some strange problem that's causing this to happen).

I used different SATA cables, different ports, changed the power cable...no luck whatsoever. Boot priorities are alright I think. The primary device is my hard disk. I've disconnected it last Saturday. Is it dying?

I haven't thought of that to be honest. Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow.
