Slim DVD Drives

Thread Starter
I need a slim DVD drive (no need for burning) for my HTPC. The reduced ODD footprint will allow my to install a larger fan and provide more airflow (I can hit 100C on a E-350 burn-in).

1) Can you find a cheaper one than these $29.99 shipped?

2) Is it a SATA or microSATA port?

I would have suggested eBay but just looked and the cheapest I found for the ones you listed(and any others I could find)were right at the same price as those or more. Didn't know they had the slim drives that cheap now.

Any idea of the difference between the Sony AD-7710H and AD-7700S? They look a little different but I cannot tell what else or why?

hi, just a quick question while I'm here...
slim dvd rom/burner, only seen speeds at X8, while most of the regular ones are... X22?
I don't do much burning, so not too worried about the speed as such, but putting one in a desk top to save room, increase air flow, would be ok?

How often do you use it?

I bought a slim, USB-attached DVD burner when I committed to a permanent 2nd HD in my work laptop. The last two desktops I built, I simply use that for install or, on rare occasion, if I needed to pull something off CD/DVD. I think I've needed it two or three times in the past year!

If you don't do much burning, why not?

Note that you will need really tiny screws for internal mounts and a microSATA->SATA adapter for desktop use.
