Can 6950 still unlock? - Page 2

Um, the graph includes both 1GB and 2GB versions. Granted, if the OP wants to do 3 monitor setup then the 6950 2GB is the way to go. Otherwise its quite even between them when you take into account each card's strengths....

Your point is invalid on overclocking, if he is going to overclock the 6950 then he is going to overclock the 560ti

Overclocked 560Ti's can compete with stock 570's and 6970's, they are right up there with bang for buck...
I quoted the 1GB because no one is saying OP is gonna gaming @ those resolutions if hes even going to be gaming at all.

A overclocked 560ti is not gonna compete with a unlocked+overclocked 6950 with stock cooling.

The 6950 when unlocked and overclocked will beat the 560 Ti hands down. Also it should be noted that it draws less power and scales far better in CFX than SLI.

But from what I see the 2GB model costs a good chunk more than a GTX 560 TI which can be had for ~200 AR. So it's really up to what the OP is looking for.

If he just wants one good card and doesn't care for PhysX (I picked up 470s over the 5 series for this, among other reasons, and haven't found any good game that uses it...) than the 6950 2GB, if it's in his price range is the better card to have.

As for drivers, there's nothing really wrong with them, just they are only updated monthly and I hear some people who have issues with CFX, but it only seems like a few, but it has been deal breakers for a few of the members on this board.

I had a twin frozer 560ti but like some others owners at nvidia forum couldn't get it to work rma'd it got a gigabyte one still didn't work. I have the 6950 1gb XFX it's very stable at 1125v 950/1450. I think hardwareheaven had this card at 1200v 1000/1500! It can be quite noisy when fans at 50 or above but has played anything I've thrown at it 1920x1080 maxed out. I would have liked the quieter 560 with physx but very happy all the same considering not many games take advantage of physx. Not sure why previous poster thinks XFX suck as my cards fine. I have tried to unlock shaders and it's a no no the card is read only it seems. I think an oc 560 v oc 6950 is a close call so The 6950 was originally a higher tier card than 560 so it does have a little more grunt but some games prefer certain card so check you favourite games, unless it comes down to red v green for u! Either way both great cards

Here is an article clearly outlining the advantage the 6 series has in CFX over SLI.

Link: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...g,2865-10.html

Edit: It should be noted that the 1GB model is aimed to fight the 560 Ti which makes sense as they are closer in performance while the 6950 has it's own place just above the 560 Ti in terms of price and performance. As much as I love nVidia I cannot deny the 6950 2GB being a better card than the 560 Ti.

Looking at various reviews/benchmarks the difference between 1gb and 2gb is very small some games 1gb is better. As games move forward maybe the extra 1gb of memory will come into play but at present not much difference at all. 2gb reference unlocks but very noisy compared to 560ti 1gb no unlock but priced to compete with 560 as the man said.

Unlock shaders and overclock it to 6970 speeds and beyond.

I have a list of non ref 6950s that's been known to unlock:

And Amazon has a bunch of reference cards.

Both of mine are reference and unlocked. I may be selling one in a day or so here so keep and eye on the FS section.
