So I got a new CPU, any good

Hey guys,

Got a processor for free due to my sweet talking skills lol
Anyway, it arrived today and its a x4 840

Just wondering how good this is?
Also how it overclocks and if it will bottleneck a 570/6950?

I was saving up for a high end i5 gaming rig, but if this can help build a high end gaming to be used for 3-4 years without an upgrade then that's an avenue I'm willing to explore.

Thanks in advance guys

Is it a Phenom II X4? Or a Phenom I X4?

Sorry, I forgot all the processor model numbers, but either way you won't have any "bottlenecking" issues.

Sorry I Wasn't clear its a
Phenom II x4 840 (3.2 GHz, 2.0 MB, AM3)

Also, atomfix I was thinking the same thing.
Would it be better to sell this off and use summer job money to get the newest architecture AMD/Intel

Those are basicly Athlon 2 x4 @ 3.2 Ghz
Try to get it to 3.5+ and you should be fine.

Well, it might be worth it, what AMD is saying about the new Bulldozer chips, looks really promiseing and it could just acually be on par with Intel this time

AMD chips always overclock better too and lets just hope it stays that way with the new chips

And just get a ASUS Crosshair IV Formula or something, It's AM3 but its supposed to be AM3+ compatible already, with a AM3+ BIOS ready on ASUS website too

I'm not sure what you are talking about.
Both Intel and AMD are good overclockers.
Intel wins with it's 32nm advantage though.

I'm sure everyone will agree.

So you mean in theory its possible to build a rig using this, then swap out bulldozer say a year on or so because AM3+ supports both?

Also, just how outdated is this architecture and how will it fare gaming wise over the next 2-3 years

Is 3.5GHz the max OC I could reach in theory, especially since I will be using parts closer to the budget end of the spectrum?
I would have been hoping for 4 lol

And thanks for all the lightspeed responses, this forum rocks

On stock cooler you should be able to easily reach that 3.5Ghz.
I'm not starting a flame war, you did by saying AMD Always overclock better.
I just pointed out that intel is also a good overclocker.

Here is the flame :
An overclocked AMD can barely reach a stock intel
(speaking of same amount of cores)
