I don't think they are trying to run a scam as much as they are forced to market that way because people really don't know any better. I get customers in my store all day long coming in that just say "I need this much memory." I had a guy come in my store the other day buying an hp desktop and getting a dedicated card for it. I walked up to him in our graphics card section, and asked what he was looking for, and he said he was trying to find out which cards had 1gb of ddr5 memory. I asked him what he was doing, what exactly he was looking to gain from the memory speed/amount, and informed him on what he should really be looking for past that.
I get even more customers that come up to me and say "I don't know much about computers but my friend told me I need 8gb of memory and a 1TB hard drive," and its an uphill fight the whole way because I have to break down their friend's advice and get them something that works better for them thats cheaper because otherwise they would have bought a 900 dollar desktop for the sake of that 8gb of memory for something they were just using for surfing and basic productivity.
In the end, I think that misinformation is already there and if you don't have that little "zomg 3GB of memory!!" tagline on your box, so many people will just overlook your cards because they just don't know any better.
