HDMI Not plugged in?

Thread Starter
Ok so I just got a yamaha 467 receiver. Got it all hooked up via HDMI and in the sound contol panel is says display disconnected. Nothing I do seems to work.

I did however discover is shows up in the monitor selection as if windows is seeing my receiver as a monitor. If I extend the display to it all of a sudden HDMI now works and I can get my sound, but then it disables my 2nd monitor and I can't seem to get it to extend to that as well.

Any ideas?

been searching for hours and all I can find is irrelevant stuff on people trying to use TV's

I am assuming you are talking about your Sapphire 5850. I believe for that guy, the HDMI and DVI shares one of the channels. When I used Eyefinity with mine, I remember it had to be DVI x 2 + DP or specific DVI + HDMI + DP.

So, the HDMI is being picked up as another source, so one of the DVI's is cutting out is what I believe is happening. Maybe getting a HDMI to DP or DVI to DP Active Adapter might do the trick. Sapphire sells one for $29.99.

Good luck!

This, Active Displayport Adapter, changes one of your Male DVI ends to a DP so you can plug it into the DP port on your 5850. This will allow you to have a monitor in DP via DVI-to-DP adapter + HDMI + DVI. Should work without a hic-up. Seems a bit exobitant just for a receiver though. I'd personally just let one monitor go dead when I use audio than spend $29 + tax & shipping.

Well I may have solved this problem. I have optical out on my motherboard and 2 optical ins on my receiver. Is optical a good way to go? Does it have the same quality sound as HDMI and all that?

someone said i won't get HD Audio, how will that affect Bluray audio?

Optical has similar quality as HDMI on most systems. Main thing is optical is older and has low bandwidth. Low bandwidth inhibits it from performing well on anything above a 5.1 and I don't think it can play loss-less. It can do 5.1 potentially. I never tried it but probably sounds horrible for HD surround on a 7.1, else it does fine.

In short, it will do HD (definition of HD isn't that demanding in reality) audio but is limited dependent on other variables such as 2.1, 5.1, or 7.1, and whether or not you are an audiophile that wants loss-less. HDMI is the better choice.

Ok so let me organize this..

I have 2 dvi one going to each monitor, hdmi going to receiver. Obviously this is a conflict.

So if I do 1 dvi 1 display port to dvi adapter to each monitor and hdmi to receiver I can do both monitors and my receiver??

If I understand you correctly, you are going to be using all three types of ports, which will work. You might need to find out which DVI shares with HDMI.

Good Luck,

no, I'm only using 2 dvi's and 1 hdmi. Someone said that hdmi and DVI are shared and only 2 can be used at the same time. If i get a display port to dvi active adapter I will be able to use HDMI how I want.

That basically what I've been saying this whole time and yes, that is what I said last post also, cause once you get an adapter to make DVI into a DP, you will be using all three types.

Good Luck.
