Hard drive not found

Thread Starter
My external hard drive that was connected via usb to my computer was transferring some files between my computer and I think the power connector must have been knocked off because files started becoming corrupt. And when I tried to turn the hard drive on again it would show up in my computer but windows said it needed to be formatted. I read that the data can be recovered by using 3rd party software. I was wondering if I needed to format the drive first before I can begin recovering the files or should I just try to recover the files prior to formatting the drive?

Go to majorgeeks.com and search for recovery programs, they have a bunch I downloaded and tried. Can't remember what worked well or not the one time I needed it.

If you need to recover files before you formatt try this. Formatting before recovery is just putting another nail in the coffin.

Thx for the replys guys, I have downloaded recuva and active partition recovery. Hope one of them works, I just wanted to confirm that formatting it first would be a bad idea. Also does anyone know how long it usually takes to recover a drive?

it can vary depending on how much data is being recovered. Most HDs these days can move about 50 gigs in 30 mins. If you have a raptor, it will be less, if it's an old drive, it will be more.
